What are the differences between these transmissions?

What are the differences between these transmissions?

I actually have several questions. so I will try and separate them

#1. My car is a 2005 model bifuel etc automatic. The chassis code is 489XXX so facelift model etc. But the gearbox doen't quite match the year model. The serial number starts with 04M, so year 2004? According to the part numbers, my car should have come with gearbox 8251832 originally, but the number is 30681180, which turns out to be a replacement/upgrade? The only place where I even remotely found this code was here but for a diesel tf80sc??



#2 Compatibility between years.
I am offered a $100-130 AW55-50SN with code 8667365 from S80 2.4 diesel, but serial number 02C which indicates early or mid 2002, the year where they were most problematic. The gearbox cannot switch out of 3rd or maybe it was inability to get into 3rd gear, I am unsure. Basically the guy is scrapping it.
I was thinking of buying it and attempting a rebuild, of course fully aware that the damage might extend to the sun gears whatever.

My research tells me that throughout the years Volvo did many service bulletins and upgrades. B4 servo update whatever that is, B5 spring whatever it's for etc. I suspect the valve body of this car is probably the early A stamp perhaps, whereas mine could potentially be B stamp.

If I were to purchase this transmission and *attempt* rebuild with new filter, clutch packs, would it at all be compatible with my TCM? My TCM is 29.1 and the scrapped gearbox was using 27.1.

You want a 03+ gearbox, it is more sturdy mechanically. The lesser miles the better, of course.

For $100 I would definitely take that one, because I could take good parts out of it, but would also find a 03+.

You would need to install a couple of Omega Machine steel sleeves in the casing.

TCM only cares about the valve body. And its harness.

What are those steel sleeves for? And does it require a press?

And what is more sturdy 03+ vs 01-02? What are the mechanical differences.

I don't have the sleeve there, mine just started to spin and still was OK for Loctite 620.

Why you want the lesser miles/km. This one from 220k miles transmission with only 1 ATF change at around 110k miles:

Sleeves installation requires a mill+press, yes.

Turbine shaft is thicker and more robust, and other parts are beefier. I don't remember all the details.

Mileage is often manipulated over here and junk yards do not keep records which gearbox is on how many miles. 95-2005 cars(various makes and models) never cross the 150k miles mark, because all odometers are manipulated.

Even my 2005 S60 says 155k miles on the dash, but VIDA said DIM-0001 mileage manipulated.

@vtl, do you think it's a good idea to open up my solenoids sls slt slu to clean them with a 4mm drill bit?

Are there any reasons why one should not do this?

It gives little for the amount of work to get to them.

I feel like it is my last resort to fix slow and bumpy gearshifts and lastly my only attempt at fixing bad TC lockup.

In gear shifter position 3 and light and slow acceleration there is a particular speed and rpm where I get strong torque converter shudder but above that particular speed its fine. It's possible my tc is already damaged beyond a simple solenoid cleaning, but it might still work to get pressures correct.

In normal D position I feel like at speed 80kmh and 5th gear I can also feel something but I can't be certain it's almost imperceptible

Look at SLU solenoid current (available in VIDA), 400-600 mA is a partial TC lock, where slip occurs. You can remediate it temporarily with ATP AT-222 Shudder Fix, but you really be looking for a rebuilt torque converter.

Also shudder in 4 and 5 gears could be clutch pack worn.

I had a developing shudder in 4th gear in partial lockup mode, decided to rebuild the whole transmission. Also Sonnax refurbished valve body never worked fully right, I just wasted my money. New GM valve body (made by Aisin Warner, of course) fixed it.
