It's been a while since I did the brakes on my 06 v70, so can't remember. Maybe someone here knows:
In order to replace the front brake rotor, I know the whole caliper holder has to come off. Can I just take out the two caliper holder bolts (to the knuckle) and pull off the whole thing (caliper holder/caliper/pads)? Or do I have to take out the slider pins and remove the caliper/pads first before unbolting the caliper holder?
Thanks!
front brake rotor r/r: do pins/caliper need to come off individually?

nope, just remove the 2 big bracket bolts, pry the pads back so you can slide the caliper free as you remove it all in one piece.
remove the 10mm bolt and the disk pops off.
remove the 10mm bolt and the disk pops off.

It’s the difference between a mechanic and a technician
Technician: removes bolts , pops caliper off, rotor, replaces. One hour
Brake job lasts one year
Post on Fora about bad Volvo brake design
Mechanic. Removes calipers, springs, bolts, rotor, two hours
Spring deforms slightly, so it is replaced.
Piston deal on caliper slightly off place, gets reseated, saves caliper from rusting in one year
Brake pad inspection..wearing slightly unevenly. This means piston is seizing. Replaces caliper , saves new rotor from demise
Cleans and lubes caliper slides for best brake performance
Cleans face of wheel hub for true running of rotor
Uses new caliper bracket bolts per Volvo

New caliper bracket bolts? MVS members are TechMechs, some going the 1.5 while others the 3.0 hour route.

The older I get, and the less time I have left on Earth, the more I appreciate the job done carefully and completely. Brakes are one of the two most important things to do right, steering being the other.
Here’s a thread where the first picture shows how cutting a corner on a brake job doesn’t pay…

This explains something that had bothered me a long time. I think I am good at repairs, but I could never be fast enough to make money repairing for others.abscate wrote: ↑11 Nov 2023, 06:22 It’s the difference between a mechanic and a technician

Brake caliper mounting…
When I did the rear axle drop on the cat I replaced every single mount bolt and cleaned and never seized the lot. This saved my life when my workmanship failed 200 miles from home, and an Indy dropped it for me 4 hours labor
No judging here. We have all cut corners on a job because of time money people pressure. But, understanding the job in its completion is important so we understand the consequences.Install:
the new brake disc. Tighten the locating pin (5). Tighten to 8 Nm
the caliper holder. Use new mounting screws (4). Tighten to 100 Nm .
