V70 2.4 SE auto UK , 2001 not blowing any air in the cabin.

Post by tmurrell »

Hi,
Just bought this car from an auction, always fancied one.
driving the 100 miles home i noticed that the air from all the vents in the car is blowing out so weak I could barely feel it.( including the rear vents.)
With AC on the vent is cool to touch, with heat on its warm but still no volume of air.
The fan on manual or auto will drive to maximum as it can be heard roaring away behind the glovebox.
With the car stationary and the fan turned off I can hear motors whirring behing the vents when I press the air direction controls on the dash, I assume from this the shields are opening and closing.
Any idea what this problem could be?
Many thanks

See if turning down the temperature control (thermostat) to a cooler setting will make a difference. I'm thinking that maybe it's fairly cool in your car to begin with, thus the lack of fan pressure. If it was really hot and you turned your A/C on, it should blow fairly strong, but not so much when there is little difference between desired temp. and actual temp. Hope I'm making sense.

Unfortunatly no,
Its been very warm here the last couple of days and both sides of
the climate are at minimum, AC on with the fan spinning flat out..
Just a breath of air through the vents on the dash and nothing at all out of the 2 vents in the B pillars that feed the rear seating area.

Any other thoughts maybe?

Then I would say that your fan has crapped out on you or at least the large relay that is mounted near it that feeds it voltage. What you might be getting (which seems like the fan) is just air passing through by way of force as you're driving. To tell you the truth I'm not that familiar with your particular A/C system (although I too have a V70 that is the later style) but I assume they are similar to the earlier FWD Volvo's like my S70 which I have become somewhat intimately familiar with. Hoping that others can chime in.

yes, I hear what your saying and it makes sence, however,
I can have the car sat on the driveway in manual air mode and crank the
fan speed up and down with the control knob.
I was thinking maybe the fan impeller could have come loose on the motor- ie the motor is spinning but the fan is just turning slowly with friction, is that possible?
Also are there any filters that could block that would affect air flow into the cabin?

Hi,

From your description I think it is one of two possibilities:

1. As you have already said. The motor is turning but the fan is loose on the spindle. I don't think it is a common fault. but you don't know the history of the car, it may have been damaged in the passed and bodged back on?
2. The flaps to control the direction of the air are controlled by motors and the CCM. They could be stuck in the closed position? Check fuses and try a Reset of the CCM? Take off the trim under the Glove box and you may be able to see the heater vent contols.

Hope its something easy and cheap to fix?
Bob.

Ok
looks like ive sorted it.
I removed the trim under the glovebox and found 4 torx screws
holding a cover for the cabin filter.
Removed the filter and it was choked up and sooty black.
Just as a test I replaced the cover and tried the system again without
a filter.
Now thats more like it!
strong air flow everywhere including the rear seating area,
Just got to buy a new one now.
Thank god thats all it was.
