So the power steering system is low/possibly empty. It has a bunch of fluid everywhere, I am trying to narrow down where it is coming out of. Do I have to use the chf11 fluid or can I use a cheaper alternative to find the leak and then flush the system after I have the leak fixed and fill with proper fluid? Thanks in advance.

You will be fine with any DEX III compatible alternative for finding the leak. Today's automatic transmission fluids are better than back in the day. I've gone through 4 cases of Havoline using it both in the transmission and PWST without issue in many makes and models. It was much cheaper 3 to 4 years ago however. Used in Honda, Volvo, Nissan and Lexus.
