Heater core bypass: easy?

Post by fushionEdge »

Hi there
My heater core is gone bad.
I think this is so because I am loosing coolant. I go from Max to Min after 150 miles. I thought it possibly was the water pump, but the symptoms are
1:windows fogging up when driving if I dont use the heater to clear them up
2:slight antifreeze smell. Last week it became an overpowering smell.
3:Doesn't seem to be a head gasket leak because the coolant is still a good color, not brown.

I haven't gone and looked under the carpet, but after a lot of browsing Volvo forums, I'm pretty positive its the heater core.
Ill get around to changing it, but I cant yet, so can it be bypassed easily?
thanks

edit:
looking at the diagrams, maybe its just easier changing the heater core? :P
Thanks for any input!

You really need the heater core and it's not that hard to replace and not that expensive either...search our repair database and you'll find a write-up on this. A by-pass is much more of a hassle than just replacing it.

Interesting idea. I've never changed the heater hoses myself. The end that goes into the firewall connection is 'special', but maybe the other end that goes to the engine is a normal flush-cut/hose clamp connection and you could unclamp those ends and run a short-circuit line instead.

Might be worth taking a look at, as a temporary fix.

Like I said before, make sure you read the write-up in the repair database. Seems like I remember that the clamps they sell for the new units don't exactly fit like the ones that come off so make sure you don't damage the old ones when you take the hoses through the firewall loose.

The heat comes off the rear of the head , left side of car and returns to the water pipe feeding the water pump, down near the turbocharger

Both pipes are 16mm OD with a 17mm step to seal. You can bridge either the hoses removed from the bulkhead or the supply/ return pipe with 5/8 heater hose.

All the flanges on the water pipe are the same in the NA I just harvested. Heater in block, return on pipe, feed for oil cooler, return to reservoir 16 mm OD pipe with a step.
