1998 S70 noise (m4a file attached)

Post by mar601 »

Around 45 seconds into the attached file (if it accepts the file), I've been getting this noise (and seems to me I've heard it in the past with braking?). It's like the sound of a spring unwinding. It's been doing this for a week and always when the car has been cold or after a startup when sitting for a bit. It seems to emanate from an area close to the cabin and on drivers side. It doesn't do it constantly and seems to dissipate after some driving but I'm being careful and just doing short trips. Also, the sound usually lasts for 4 - 5 seconds or so and I "think" it may be more prone to do turning left but need to test that out. I do know it will do it without turning as well. THANKS for any help.

EDIT -- actually it's doing it without braking I should note.

Recording was just done on my phone sitting on the dashboard.

That's what I was thinking because it seems I remember having the same noise when I hit the brakes hard when the ABS wasn't functioning.
So, what part(s) are doing this as like I say, it makes the noise without braking. (or maybe I didn't say that). edit -- my abs light is on now as I gave up on it. 2 modules repaired and bad sensors -- a pain the ass. it does sound close to the drivers side and I know the ABS pump is there but don't know if it makes that kind of noise or not.

I think it's a test cycle for the ABS - normal.

But I've never heard it do this before and I've owned the car for 23 years.

Pull your fuse for the ABS and see if it happens.

OK...great. Took out both the main and supplemental ABS fuses and noise is gone. I'm guessing it's ok to drive with them left out? Seems so.

So what do you think the issue is? The ABS pump maybe? Like I say, a noise that sounds like a spring unwinding or something.
-- thanks much

It could be the pump. Were the brakes operating ok before the fuses were pulled from the ABS? If the peddle is a little low or soft, there could be an air lock in the pump. It takes a pressure bleeder to really bleed the pump.

Ok. Yes, the brakes were fine. Have been with and without ABS for the life of this car. Had modules rebuilt 3 times I think plus sensors fixed. At least I can add this to the list when I take it into the shop. I want this car to last the rest of my life. It has 165K on it and I'm 70 yrs old. My next issue (and post) will be about exhaust. I'd like to have a whole new exhaust installed. It's getting noisy and leaking near the cat converter. Get a P0447 constantly and P0422, P0133 sometimes also. -- thanks
