Please Advise - 2006 XC70 - Front Windshield Wipers Do Not Work

Post by dave123456 »

Good morning. Our son is driving our 2006 XC70 and the front windshield wipers have stopped working. I have done the following: replaced the 25A fuse in the engine bay fuse box. I have purchased two new relays (part number 9441160) but cannot find a diagram that shows which one is for the front wipers. I have replaced the wiper motor assembly with a good part from Erievovo. I have replaced the wiper control stalk on the steering column. The controls will work the rear wiper but nothing happening with the front. We have a couple of days of clear weather but then rain will be moving in and I need to have this fixed. What am I missing? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but I am confused. Is it the headlights or front windshield wipers that are not working or both?

Neil.

I didn't really find that helpful since there are no diagrams with labels for which relays are which.

I found a 2006 S60 engine compartment fuse and relay layout, engine compartment type 1.
https://fuseandrelay.com/volvo/s60.htm

There are two relays; FST1 high/low speed wiper relay and FST2 interval wiper relay. If it is one of the relays I would think it would be FST2 but could be the other one too so check both.

I replaced FST1 and FST2 with brand new relays. It did not make a difference. Are the relays in the rear of the car involved in the front wiper system at all? In the troubleshooting I have seen, I have now replaced every component of the system in the front: fuse, relays, wiper motor and assembly, wiper control arm on the steering column. What else could it be?

- I'd check the wiring btw the relays and the ws motor's connector.
D/c battery cable first.

- You never know the wires are chewed by animals.

- Could be CEM issues.

At this point I would remove the FST1 and 2 relays and probe the socket pins to see what's going on. The relays sockets you want to look at are sockets 85 and 86 on both relays with the wipers turned off and then turned on. Pins 85 and 86 are the relay coil with 12V on one side(86) and a control signal(85) on the other to energize the relay. The CEM control the relays on/off state and pin 85 is from the CEM and needs to be low or near 0 volts to energize the relay coils; when the relays coils are energized the high current contacts are closed pins 30 and 87 and 87a in some cases. When the wipers are on there should be 12V and 0V across the relay coil to close the relay contacts and power the windshield wipers. Pin 87 on the intermittent relay should have 12V from the fuse power source. The intermittent relay will switch 12V to the high/low relay pin 30. The high/low relay will switch the 12V to 87 or 87a to power the wiper motor. Look on the underside of the relay for these pin numbers.
If the relays and wiper motor are good then the relays are either not getting 12V from the power source, the fuse or the CEM is not turning on the relays, the control signal to pin 85. You can see what's going on by measuring the relays sockets. If everything looks okay with the relay control signal from the CEM and 12V power source to the relays then the wiring to the wiper motor or the wiper motor itself would be the problem.
