Idle control valve?

Post by Cvovo7 »

Hello, I just bought a 96 850 glt and it will start but won't stay running. I pulled the idle control valve and cleaned it. Still same thing. Plugs n wires were swapped also. Maybe MAF sensor??? Any help is appreciated. Clean car 160k

Replace every vacuum line on the car, preferably with silicone. I do this to every new to me 850. Chances it solves the problem may be as high as 50-50. If it does not, you will have solved a future one for sure.

I'll definitely look into it. Thanks a lot. The thing is car was running fine. Sometimes it will take about 10 times trying to start then it would idle and purr like a kitten. Now it just won't stay running. Maybe a fuel pump also? Plugs are about a year old but car sat in my driveway for a while. No wear and tear on them.

The ECT (coolant temp sensor) and the iAC both act like chokes to richen or not the amount of air and fuel going into the engine when cold.

Do you still get the same issue if the car only sits for maybe 20 minutes or so?

Fuel pressure should be 40-43 psi when running. This can be checked at the Schraeder valve on the fuel rail. The guys have already covered the other issues.

You may have cleaned the iAC but is it working? Can you hear it clicking when you turn the ignition on. Probably easier to hear with your ear closer to is and have someone else switch the ignition on so you may be able to hear it.

It is possible to damage the iAC by over cleaning it and to make it stick as I found out. I used a 9V battery with short cables taped to it to test it. +ve connection to the middle pin and ground/-ve to either of the outer pins.

Good Luck!

Neil.

if you unplug the MAF sensor and the problem is gone, it's your MAF. If not, likely vacum or ignition.
Especially the hoses close to the Turbo are tough to check for cracks.

The fuel pump or (fuel pump relay) - from my sample size of 3 850ies experience - usually works or it doesn't at all.
