Air Box Thermostat 1988 240
I was doing routine maintenance to my 1988 240 volvo. I changed oil and filter and replaced flame trap. I checked my air box thermostat, it was failed in the bring hot air up to the air mass sensor mode. I have two more air boxes hanging on the wall in my garage. They were both failed in the same position also. After about half an hour of wondering how the hell it comes apart I realised there are six plastic clips on air box and flapper mechanism comes out. Then it was a simple matter of replacing thermostat by compressing spring designed by gengis kahn. Car runs much better now. Engine feel more powerful and pulls up hills better. If you have never checked yours it might be worth doing

One of those things that is usually overlooked at service time. Even the dealer does not check it.
It is now in the Repair Database.

If you look at your air box it has two openings to outside air. One draws warm air from around the exhaust through a tube (it is this one that is controlled by the thermostat) and another one that draws outside air. The thermostat itself is hidden in the airbox behind a flapper assembly. I am not certain you have one but I will see if it is listed in fcp groton for your car.
Yes you have the exact same one as on the 240. You can find it here:

no this won't cause your car to shut off. Some likely suspects for shut off include distributor pickup if you have one, pickup on bellhousing if you dont, radio supression relay, fuel pump relay. You can check these out before you replace anything. I would try tapping the fuel pump relay when problem occurs first, followed by freeze spray on the suspect hall pickup. available at radio shack for an excessive (i think about $11 for a little can) I have some more for you to read too if I can find the link.
