Do it with the driver's glass lowered and:
- Engine off
- Engine running.
In both cases, with engine off and on, so long as the first key is in the ignition, the second remote will not work at all.

So I'm going to be very careful not to lock the car with the key in the ignition.

Still, I wonder why neither of my physical keys won't work in the lock cylinder. I could almost swear that it worked months ago, and I have both original keys.
Could it be because the "Alarm system" service light is on? Seems like it's hard to believe, but it's entirely conceivable.

This makes perfect sense to me as in older P80 when remote locking is handled by VGLA it too doesn't like key at ignition.

On P2 platform if you take DIM physically out Central locking wont work either as Low Speed CAN Bus connection will break.

Are you the original owner?

Maybe the ignition lock @ steering column was changed in the past?

Does the car have the deadlocks? IIRC it can't be unlocked mechanically from outside if locked from inside.

I'm the 4th owner, purchased 2 years ago and driven 11k miles. The airbag was replaced from the recall, but I don't know about the steering column or ignition cylinder. But that would explain why the key would not work on the door.

Interesting.. so I tried using the key on the door and it won't turn no matter what. Given that the window frame was a little bent when I bought the car, the previous owner must have found himself locked out before. Thanks guys!

Perhaps the lock is mechanically broken.

I never lock my cars when they are parked in front of the house, and it pisses me off when inlaws come to visit us and always lock them after taking for errands. Like it's a bad neighborhood =)
