Well, I don't know if it's murphy's laws, but 10 years after, here I am again... 2001 S60 T5.. Same car, similar (??) problem...

10 years ago had a problem (up in this thread), and had the precious help of our generous friend precopster, who steered me in the way of the solution... Had a bricked ETM body. Bought new (old, yellow labeled) one from ebay, updated it with Sacer contacless sensor, and off I went, for 130kkm...

Last week sold the car, bragging to buyer about this problem solved " for life", and the new Bosch MAF I had installed 1 week ago, and the car running flawlessly...

Literally the next day the guy phoned me... " Well Filipe, the car pulled like an express train yesterday... and today, out of nowhere.. Limp mode... "

My heart dropped..

Had it towed to my 15year long mechanic, who scanned it with generic software, who spit out these codes:

982A
902A
959F
903F

He had a check and aparently while the throttle test goes from 0 all the way to 99%, the accelerator pedal only goes between 2-17% or so, on the software test...

He leans towards accelerator position sensor itself...

Any help you guys can give, will be highly appreciated!!!!!

I am assuming the fixing costs, even though I delivered it running flawlessly, and it had no previous warning signs whatsoever... So the cheaper I can do it the better... Otherwise it would have been better just to write it off instead of selling it..

But when it's working it is such an amazing car... The 5 cylinder roar...

The accelerator position will usually come up on the list of faults, however I have never replaced an accelerator position sensor after working on quite afew of these early ETM cars.

So many errors on these ETMs apart from the position sensors. In the pile of discarded ETMs I accumulated over the years, I had multiple logic board failures, throttle shafts that had "twisted" (they were a 2 piece design) and showed readings of more than 10% variation between sensor 1 and sensor 2, badly welded terminals that popped apart within months of production.

They were a total piece of crap to be honest and I was so glad that Volvo implemented use of Hitachi and Bosch throttles.

My advice is to perform the "ETM test" but this is of course only available to owners of cars that had upgraded firmware.

I have a Yellow design one, which means its the updated version, right?

How can I perform the ETM test? Is it through VIDA?

It's not the build of the ETM that allows the ETM test; it's whether the vehicle has been back to dealer for firmware update. You can have a yellow label that has been loaded with old firmware.

In Diagnostics Menu Choose ETM icon then Advanced tab then click on the ETM menu and ETM Test will highlight. If you can perform the test you have newer firmware.

So, update:

Not being close to the car, I sent the ETM to some guys specialized in ETM's, with a proper bench test... They told me it had no problem whatsoever... They even sent me the test video, with no errors and it being tested in the different regimes and responding normally...

This one I was not counting on...

Considering the errors it came up with were almost all ETM related (982A, 902A, 959F, 903F, ) I...

...really need help... ?

You're not close to the car but managed to send the ETM away;. that's quite remarkable!!

So who do you believe...your car's diagnostic system or these guys? You may want to look at programming another ETM to match your own. The software version of your ETM can be viewed in Vida and there are a couple of people here on the forum that can match the software version for you onto a used ETM.

I have a mechanic, back home, where the car is (Portugal). He took it apart and mailed it to those ETM guys.

Because I am on vacation, out of the country, for these 2 weeks.

So I am coordinating the whole thing remotely... (Apparently with moderate-to-zero success... :|) As it happened literally the day before my flight.

And that is also why I did not perform the ETM test on VIDA that you told me... Because VIDA/DICE are mine and work with my laptop, which isn't available at the moment... So I tried to do what I hoped was the next best thing, in order to try to move the subject forward...

I will try the ETM test on VIDA when I get back home, assuming I have the upgraded software...

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to try to help.

I will get back with the results... :|

Looking for help on this matter on S60 2.4 2001

Fault codes were
9520 ECM-9520 ACCELERATOR PEDAL (AP) POSITION SENSOR
951F P0121
918F ECM-918F ACCELERATOR PEDAL (AP) POSITION SENSOR

I've read all the posts and I'm familiar with electronics. I replaced the sensor with sacer with the help of the instructions on this post. I set the magnet so that the signal voltage on idle was 1.35V (tested on bench). On the other sensor the signal voltage was 1.30V. Throttle is behaving strangely and the rpm is going sometimes very high when driving on the road and sometimes stalls the engine on the traffic lights. I calbrated the magnet to 1.47V since some posts were referring that 1.45V should work but the throttle is still not behaving correctly. There's a long lag and sometimes stalls the engine.
Any idea what should I try next or do you think the problem is on the ETM unit? I don't have VIDA right now to read the potentiometer values.
Any other options about fixing this issue? Thanks!
