Can you identify this part?

Post by ken_f »

First off, I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. Have found this forum super useful with my v8 xc90 over the years so thanks all.
Onto the problem.
I need to replace the alternator in my v8 RHD xc90, aussie spec (if there's such a thing).
Following a very useful guide here: https://andrewpeng.net/cars/2006-volvo- ... eplacement , however I get stuck with an unidentified bracket stopping me from undoing the lower bolts.
Can anyone identify what this piece is and how to remove it?
It's the large black piece in the photos, secured by two bolts, to a bracket that is welded to the subframe. It's a folded piece of steel, that has a cutout that curves nicely around the steering rack, and is then cut nicely at the end to curve around the alternator. undoing the two bolts allows it to move, but theres clearly a bolt somewhere to the left or something similar holding it in place.
I believe I can remove this but have no idea how. If I can remove it, i think I'll have a chance of swapping the alternator out :-)
Thanks!

An Australian V8 you say? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pursuit_Special Even after running MVS for 20+ years, mention of V8 and Australia will never bump Mad Max off the top spot for what comes to mind first.

I looked in the MVS repair database, but there's only alternator DIYs for the 6-cyl, not 8. I didn't search the forum, and I don't have firsthand knowledge because I've never owned a Volvo V8 in any hemisphere.

Bump for our friend Ken down under.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Yep, total mystery. I dont see this part on any v8 alternator swap guides i have found, nor does it exist in VIDA (not that it is easy to search for something like this) Thinking I may have to resort to dropping the subframe a bit to get to the hidden bolt and remove the mystery piece.
