'05 v70 n/a Surging on acceleration

Post by Faust »

I did again and bought another P2, this one an '05 v70 n/a, about 180k and apparently well cared for. At first performance was very power with very low power. Initially I thought this was perhaps a bad coil being similar to a condition I had with another P2, but as I add a few miles, it improves. I still have low power but most noticeable is that on acceleration it surges, losing power then regaining it. At highway speed there is also some surging but much less detectable. It seems to be improving gradually. It is possible that the car sat for some time, the service records end in 2021. I have no idea, does anyone have a suggestion? I am wondering if it sat and gas evaporated in the fuel system leaving residue.

I have nothing to test it with, nor a code reader. But I do have 2 '04 v70 sitting under my barn, both previously "good runners". So, I can experiment with changing parts.

Sounds like insufficient fuel delivery. But you better blow dust off your DiCE+VIDA and read the codes and look at the suspect sensors.

When my xc70 had weird surging it was caused by a combo of a bad/dirty MAF and my engine air intake box not sealing correctly.

Fuel pressure sensor is a possibility. What vtl said - read the codes.

It's actually live data, but still reachable with a generic OBD-II scanner.

Get a mini OBDII along with the free Car Scanner App. Has worked exceptionally well over the years. The Android dongles are a bit easier to work with than the iOS.

Need to pull codes, if any to provide you with direction. However, after chasing a couple a codes and changing parts on my 00 S70 N/A the car was still a little off.

Not sure if the 05 V70 N/A ETM is similar the 00 S70 N/A but carefully clean the butterfly front and back gently opening it with your finger. Put a cloth under the butterfly as you sparingly spray and wipe all the surfaces.

Waiting for week end to change fuel filter and add some Berrymans as recommended above. In the meanwhile, I just threw in a can of dollar store fuel injection cleaner. It has improved quite a bit, although it still seems low on power and surging can be felt when accelerating at highway speeds. Auto tans shifting is also erratic.
