Well, my car is haveing the intake/throttle body gaskets replaced today. I hope this solves the problem.
So your car is acting the same? Starts up perfectley every time but idles rough and dies in less then 30 seconds? THe only way to keep it running is with full throttle? If so, try spraying carb cleaner or something along the intake manifold where it mates to the engine. Do this while engine running and if you notice some bubbles (fluid being sucked in past the gasket) and your idiling levels out temporarily then you may have the same issue as me. Make sure the rest of your intake hoses and what not are not leaking first.
I should have the car in running order today unless there are complications! :?
Good luck

Hello all! I spent the evening taking apart the throttle body and cleaning and reassemble it is now 10pm and have rapped it up. Took the car for a quick spin around :? the neighborhood and WOW what a difference in performance. Car did not stall. However, after running for 20 mins or so I turned it off and let sit for a min and tried to restart but would not start right away.... third try it started back up and let run for couple mins, and here I am now...... Have the day off tomorrow so will take it out for a good drive to see what happens and will keep you posted. I still plan on changing the fuel filter and the fuel pump relay at the fuse box, but the local parts store did not have those in stock so had to order them. I can't beleive how much crap was inside the throttle assembly HOLY COW!!!
ONe question though, the black stem that comes out vertically from there and has two hose connections on the back side and three on the front all hoses accounted for except one. The side that has three connections only has two hoses going to it and no sign of the third whats missing? :?

If you're talking about the "vacuum tree," there should be a cap on one of the nipples if there's a hose missing. If not, you've got a vacuum leak. You can buy a cap to fit that at Autozone or probably any other auto parts store.

No progress for me, I got sent a 2.4L intake gasket
I guess telling him I had a 2.3 six times wasn't enough. Oh well those things happen unfortunantley.

Well im going to inform everyone but i don't really think it's headway....

I finally got the proper gasket yesterday and brought it to bill. He replaced it today with no positive effect. (Another great diagnosis froma volvo dealer) Same car that starts and stalls in about 30 secs. He thinks it could be a fuel pump issue (never replaced) he says that when he unpluges an injector the car will continue to idle without stalling. His theory being that the 4 injectors still plugged in are getting more fuel. He says it's rough but it idles. Now he also checked the compression today. Cylinder 1,2 and3 are at about 130 and 4 and 5 are at 90. I know this isn't good at all. He says when he adds a few drops of oil to cylinder 4 and 5 it restores it to the 130/140 range for compression. However he's not convinced 100% that thats causing the stalling.
This engine has 470kms on it and was severley overheated and had 23 thousandith of an inch plained of the head about 2 years ago. I think it may be dead...... im not gonna change the piston rings when I have another engine/tranny with 150kms.
This whole process has been long and frusturating

Certainly fuel delivery could be the issue...have you checked out the fuel pump relay? Many have been dying on this forum with the heat this summer. There's a good write-up in the repair database on how to check it by taking it out and jumpering a couple of the sockets. Otherwise, I would recommend the Seafoam treatment after you get things going again unless you change out the engine like you say you might do.

Ya, i'll look into the fuel pump relay and see if it does the trick. Bill is swapping in another fuel pump just to rule that option out..
Im not familiar with (sea foam) is it avaliable in canada? I thought it was a engine cleaner, but will it help with compression? I'll deffinently try to track some down. THanks again MIJ i'll update you guys once the car is figured out. Hopefully soon!!!! getting tired of sharing the XC with my wife. lol
