Has anyone come across a C-clip like this?

I have cross posted this from the P3 forum as there is little traffic there. This is the weirdest axle clip I have seen and I can see why they get jammed in the transmission. Strange thing is that this is the one fitted to a used axle we are going to fit to a replacement trans on my friends 2013 XC60. According to the dealer it is the wrong one! For goodness sake, why do they have 7 axle types with multiple part number changes and 3 C-clip types for one car??

Most new GKN CV boots come with it.
I usually ignore it, keep it as spare and simply re-use the factory clip.

The strange thing is it is a Volvo OE axle, from 2009 and has a GKN label on it! I still think it is from a car other than an XC60 and so may have an alternate clip. It is not the clip that is listed for the 2013 XC60 T6 AWD. It is a 'normal' clip without those 'ears'.
