Xc70 D5 2007 Transmission failure / won't engage

Post by Wintervolvo »

Hi! I have a 2006/2007 XC70 D5 automatic with 350xxx km on it.

Suddenly one morning this winter i noticed the transmission slipping before engaging in drive or reverse. I drove the car to work, and in between gear shifting the engine would rev up before the the transmission engaging with a thump. There was also a big thump when shifting from park to drive when parked.

I got halfway home from work before the transmission gave up on me, only slipping and wont engage the gears. Drive or reverse dosent matter, the engine revs up but the car is not going anywhere. Transmission service required message in the dashboard.

After what i've read the first symptoms could indicate a bad valve body. Changing the valve body with solenoids seems like an achieveble job, but would it be enough? Its a secondary beater car so dont want to put alot of money in to it.

Is the best option a used transmission from a parted out xc70, or can a new valve body do the trick? 😊

Actually losing drive or reverse usually indicates a loss of pressure from a clogged internal filter. That one requires disassembly of the gearbox to replace or clean Though it could be a bad solenoid. Can the car be read for the particular error codes?

The only codes i can read out of my cheap diagnostic tool is CEM-1F00. Would Vida know if the filter i clogged?

Probably looking at a big job replacing the internal filter?

Well either no codes are present or it cannot scan the TCM. Yes it is a difficult task in that the transmission is removed, disassembled. And even then it is unclear how much life the gearbox has left in it, since the clogging of the filter(if that is indeed the issue) happens as a secondary symptom. It may very well be something else.
