80mph is technically illegal, however the indicated 78mph on my speedo which could legally be over-reading by up to 10% + the 2mph allowance most police forces comply with (70+10%+2=79) would not be an issue, therefore the chance of being ticketed for 78 on my speedo whilst keeping up with the rest of the traffic is highly unlikely.

It looks more like a cup and seat type seal. If you had issues with worn or pitted surfaces, a little gasket sealer should fix that.

Thanks to you guys for helping clear that up!

Late to the chat, but there *is* a gasket available for the angle-flange turbos (maybe even the straight flange ones too).

I have one on both of our cars (16T angle flanges to 3" DP).

Was there one from the factory? I dunno. These cars are WAY past that point.
My gasket was for a HPT so maybe there is a difference between HPT and LPT?

There is a gasket on the FWD cars, but not on the AWD from what I can see. But interesting that there may be another option.

Neil.
looking into it, for some reason that part number gasket is marked as being for the diesel cars. Not sure if they have different downpipe flanges, or if the fuel type exception is even true. I don't even know if my exhaust is leaking there, but I don't know why there would be residue around the flange.
hausmeister wrote: 10 Aug 2024, 08:38 Meh I should also drop the pan... is it possible to sneak in new rod bearings at the same time? I have seen people on yt do this on other cars just with the pan removed.

Anything else that you should do at the same time? engine mounts maybe?
I used an engine support brace instead of jacking up by the crank engine mount, so once I get a day where I'm not exhausted after work I'm going to swap out the engine mounts. I haven't had any luck on this car with aftermarket crank-side mounts but I have an annoying vibration while driving that is felt through the steering wheel. Also seems to be a slow vibration at idle. But I was sanding and painting some rear suspension parts and saw the rear anti-sway bar end links were looking pretty shot. All cracked and stretched looking.

Perhaps.

I can't say as my car is an HPT, hers is an LPT and both have angle-flanged 16Ts going to 3" downpipes, so...
(Again, not factory builds).

If you have a minor leak at the turbo outlet to the exhaust, the gasket wouldn't hurt things. They're single-use, as they do crush/deform on installation.

The exhaust housing is the same between HPT and LPT. Only difference comes in later '00 or 2001 when they went to a 7cm3 exhaust volume vs. 6cm3 on the earlier turbos.

I didn't say that you weren't telling the truth in regards to a factory installation. :)

It was more of a "needed/not needed?" thing. It more depends on the situation/condition of the mating parts, and not how spicy the turbo is.
