2002 S60. Not turbo. Where is an air cleaner tube supposed to go?

Post by rickhev1 »

I'm standing in front of my car peering down at the engine. Over to the right are the fuse box and air cleaner.
Two small tubes come out of the far side of the air cleaner over to the right, between it and the fuse box.
These tubes are close to each other. The leftmost one isn't connected to anything. The far end of it is melted and sealed.
The tube is about 27 inches long. Where is this tube supposed to go? How important is it?

I took the photo below standing on the driver's side. The fuse box is to the right, the air cleaner to the left..
The tube in question is toward the top.

Can you post a photo? If your car has no problems, it might be normal.

Many thanks. It's in the video. I believe the proper term for what I need is "vacuum hose from intake manifold to airbox." I think I'll try to procure one from my local dealer unless someone has a better idea.

Its function is to drive a vacuum motor that regulates the incoming air temperature into the air filter box. The vacuum motor moves a valve that selects either cold air or air warmed by the exhaust routed in by the shiny silver elephant hose behind the engine.

In climes like the SC, it isn’t too important. In winter it helps stop icing of stuff. Your car adjusts the fuel injected for whatever temperature air comes in.

Some generic vacuum hose works fine, Route it carefully and zip tie in place. Make sure the snout on the vacuum motor isn’t broken. The other end goes onto the intake manifold vacuum port.
