Power Steering Boot

Post by shookone »

My power steering is leaking alot, i found the cause to be this plastic black boot on the rack leaking when i move the steering wheel. (driver side). It looks like a clamp fell off or something. I have looked a replacement parts but no of them say if it has a clamp on that end towards the center of the car. The boot just slides and back exposing some rod. Is there a clamp for that, or how does it connect back?

The boot should be clamped on both ends, but I believe the boot is more or less a dust protector and does not actually hold fluid. Sounds like you may have a seal that has failed.

That would be an inner tie rod.
The rack is leaking into the tie rod
No seals, no fix, replace the steering rack

What you will typically get is a rebuilt rack which includes the inner tie rods. I don't have a name to recommend; just try to get the longest warranty available.

I had that same seal catastrophically fail on my 2006 XC70, it was a result of the torn boot around the inner tie rod; it allowed contamination to destroy the seal overtime till one day it puked out ALL the fluid in a very short amount of time. I found a low mileage replacement for $175 at a junkyard, and it is working perfectly.

For those who replaced the steering boot in the past, what is the easiest way to do this?

The 2006 S60 (or any Volvo in the Midwest exposed to salt) usually has seized tie rods where the INNER meets the OUTER...

Can you slide the boot from the inner side of the outer side if you don't separate the 2 parts?
