Pulling a passenger front axle, 2004 S60

Post by Oro »

Tomorrow morning I need to pull the front passenger axle on my step-son’s 2004 S60, to re-boot the inner joint.

I’ve searched endlessly and other than 1/2 hour you tube videos in Croatian, not found a clean how-to. I’ve done this job MANY times on other vehicles, just wondering if anything is odd here. I can work though on my own, but if someone has a quick bullet-point check list of anything odd, it would be appreciated.

I saw something about inner soup cans being staked to prevent the tri-lobe coming out. A thing?

Thanks in advance.

How many miles km in your car?

Use only GKN brand or Volvo brand.

I wrote a detailed DIY here:

DIY: 2004 V70 2.5T Axle and Seal (110K miles) Volvo 6843112; Corteco 19033885B R side: Volvo 9495018; Corteco 19034067B

Very easy. I undo the 2 giant bolts connecting the knuckle to the strut assembly, remove the 2 bolts holding the carrier bearing to the axle, then pull out. Have a replacement seal ready. You can also do it by popping the balljoint out but I prefer the above method.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

What br0dy519 said; check out cn90's write-ups for great summaries and hands-on implementation of what's been posted across the internet.

Nothing special here, no soup cans whatever those are, just (as you said) don't over-stress the inner CV when you pull.

Have the inner trans seal in hand as well as a new outer dust seal between axle hub and driveshaft outboard to keep those splines clean since you are in salty ON
