3 days of detailing, 2003 XC70.....results!

Post by Blacklab467 »

Just finished up a comprehensive and lengthy 3 day full detailing of my car, complete with carpet and seat removal and shampooing, console removal and disassembly to remove latent coffee spills over 21 years, and addressing minor other issues like wet passenger floor and reskinning the driver's seat. At completion, I installed a set of NOS carpeted floor mats and an NOS carpet cargo area mat that I had collected over the years. Although the exterior paint has lots of gravel chips and was hail damaged a few years ago, it cleans up well with a 3M cut polish and wax that has become my new favourite as of late. This car is my 321,000 kms daily driver, dog hauler, and regularly transports me to the mountains each weekend for hiking or skiing.

Does it stink? 3 of my P2 wagons had that distinctive stench. Not sure what is it. Maybe cabin interior material decomposing?

Oh, 5 years old XC60 started to develop a similar stench. I vacuum and Tornador all my vehicles, none have dirt of any kind.

That looks great! The scenery is really nice also. If you have a garage perfect time for a Ceramic Coat. Will cover up a lot of the age besides saving you from a few years of constant cleaning.

My brother drove from NC to AZ in the thick of winter and heavy snow in Feb 2021. I only had enough time to prep the front of the car he was taking back to AZ. Due to the heavy snow it was after he returned home he realized there was not a film of anything from the road. His neighbor who is older and a car enthusiast was shocked also.

Worth the extra effort to make life easier for a few years. Have to experience it to believe it. Just follow directions to a T. The photos are of first winter after ceramic coat in VA. Son said while everyone was scraping he just tap the glass including the windshield and everything came off in sheets. Can use on every part of the car, glass, plastic trim, headlights and brake light assembly. Some people use it on wheels also.

Two of Volvos had developed the Crayon smell. Another member asked what the big candle was for on the front seat of the 00 S70 photo. Told him it was for the crayon smell and he said his brother's car had the same smell.

It did have a mild musky smell, not terrible, it doesn't anymore after the wet carpet foam was found. I put the carpets foam side up for 5 days in the sun after I shampooed them. That foam is pretty low density and dries fast. I think the carpeted mats on the floor and in the cargo area have wool in them and can develop a stink if they're not really clean.

Yes, it was the mats that smelled, the weaved ones. Some seem to break down faster and smell more than others. The plush didn't have that issue.

About time too! That poor car was crying out for a good cleaning las time I saw it!

Car looks great. That trunk mat made all the difference.

I found changing the cabin filter and running a air bomb cleaner through the recirc system made a big difference to the air system in the car. I gave a spare one to my buddy after he moved an oily cylinder head in his car. He used half in one car and half in his 05 V70. He said his cars both were a lot better.

An ozone generating odor clearing device might help remove odor. I have one use occasional in my cars. Plug it in and leave it for a few hours.

Does not help. The smell comes quickly.
