Request Pricing Assistance on my 2006 V70

Post by C30Newbie »

Asking for advice pricing a "needy but running and driving" V70.

2006 V70 2.4 non-turbo wagon, 275K miles. Has several minor/moderate issues, but was serving as a 100% reliable daily driver until I bought my C30 a few weeks ago.

I really want to see this wagon go to an enthusiast who can deal with the issues, and take advantage of the good stuff. This car kept running and got me where I needed to go when I could not afford to maintain it. I owe it a good home with a future.

The good:
Clean title, not salvage
NO RUST, Los Angeles, CA car
Body straight, not bent, crashed, rolled, or elbowed by The Rock
Glass good
Silver paint is pretty good... not embarrassing
Black/gray interior well above average, little or no torn leather, cracked/broken plastic
Carpet not bad at all, my floor mats did their job!
Sunroof, trailer hitch receiver, OEM roof racks
Runs, drives well. A/C is cold, heater is hot
Transmission shifts pretty well, very little sticking (Lucas tranny fixer fluid put in and worked well)

The Bad:
Slow oil leak, half a quart every 3.5 weeks of daily driving (no oil pressure light while driving)
Slow water leak (overflow tank or hose), overflow tank needs fill every 1.5 weeks of daily driving
Registration expired 9-2023
ABS wheel sensor needs replacement (this also disables cruise control)
Needs 2 tires
FM radio stopped working, AM still works.
Rear tailgate gas struts dead, need replacement
A few areas need clearcoat, not catastrophic

The Ugly:
Catalytic converter stolen, replacement was not available during "supply chain" BS a year or two ago. I had a cheapo muffler shop find and install a new aftermarket replacement converter, but it needs a little tap dancing and and sleight of hand with the O2 sensor to turn off the check engine light and pass SMOG. That issue is why the registration ran out.

I believe the "value proposition" for this car is that it is not ugly, busted, etc. and will show very well. So any upgrades or time/effort/money put into this car will not be wasted, especially compared to some of the "basket case" wagons that people resurrect from the dead. This one is not dead, and not even "Mostly Dead" as Miracle Max says :)

So again, I want this to go to a wagon enthusiast who wants to hotrod or spice up a V70, or who wants to create a nice mellow stock V70 to be a guard dog for for their wife/kid/grandkid.

What do the experienced wagon owners/builders/racers/restorers think this should get on the market, whether that is the classifieds on this forum or elsewhere?

In my part of the Midwest where we don’t require smog/yearly checks your description puts it at $1500.

FWIW, the lift gate shocks are $20 on Amazon…a pair of used tires on eBay $80…narrowing that list may help attract buyers.

Thanks Krons, I just listed this car for sale in the MVS Classifieds section at this price if any wagon enthusiasts are interested. I would much rather see this go to someone here instead of a careless chimpanzee on Craigslist, but I will advertise it there too.

A bit apples and oranges but my last buy was a 05 XC90 2.5T, 190k miles for $2500. New tires, no oil burning, no leaks but needed lots (lots) of cosmetic TLC (leaking sunroof drains, a-pillars, deep clean of interior).

So far been a good runner but I’ve had to put around $1000 in it and labor up front to get it respectable. After two years of trusting it I invested in timing belt, idlers, water pump cam seals this summer…another $1000. Hope it’ll give another 100k of problem free service.

2019 I paid $4500 for my ‘07 V70 75K in v. good shape close to book. My indie had retired so I paid dealer too much to replace tailgate strut (an inexpensive part) and turn signal stalk. Sunshade sliders were broken; replaced those. I’d try for 4K if I were selling. Good luck.

Sounds like you kind of gave up on her :( Those issues are all normal at your mileage/age and fixable one at a time - thats the way it goes with any car over 200k. All at once it kind of makes the car a dog, too bad really. The oil leak of course could be expensive if you are not doing the work yourself. Might be a cam seal. The easiest workaround is the cat/inspection. Most states allow a vehicle with your age to pass even with a readiness code or two not complete - cat is one of the last to populate so you could clear codes and drive around till all but the cat code are populated then quickly get it inspected before the cat error registers. Clear the code and if it will pass inspection with the other issues you will increase the value by a lot.

In the DC area your vehicle in a well maintained state would be about $2,000-$2,500 believe it or not; as described Id say $900-1,100 in this neck of the woods...

A 2006 V70 with 275K miles does not have much value left.
Simply bc it has 275K miles. Any big issue is expensive: engine, trans, steering rack, suspension etc etc.

For that reason, cars with > 250K miles are usually very cheap.

I'd say the fair market value is a little above junk yard value.
junk yard: $600. This car ~ $1000. Good grocery car or college kid car.
