Hi all,
I'm new to Volvos as of 2 weeks ago. I only know what I have read on the web. I bought a 99 V70 FWD with 101,000 miles on it from a small lot in Chicagoland. Driving it home the speedo dropped out and came back. A day later it happened again with all kinds of dash light activity. Sifting though the posts here and elsewhere the main problem looked to be a faulty ABS controller. So, I sent it off to a rebuilder. The V70 sat in the driveway with engine off for the 10 days it took before I could put it back in. Now when I turn the key it starts, the RPM heads to 2K ish and the engine dies. I believe the ABS, Brake and Orange Arrow dash lights are on, but that could just be because they did not get a chance to go off yet.
I'm planning to try disconnecting the battery for a while to see if that helps. After that I will probably disconnect the ABS controller to see what that will do. Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions?

ABS module has nothing to do with a car dying. I say it's something else. Make sure your battery is still good. AutoZone or most any auto parts store can test your battery and alternator.

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that the ABS does not seem to be involved. I disconnected the wiring and I still have the problem. Does the OBD port on a Volvo require a special code reader or will any of them do? I think my next move is to find out what codes are logging.

On your car, most generic code readers will work.

Worn ignition tumblers can cause those symptoms. Next time this happens slightly turn back ignition key if so it needs ignition lock assy. It could also be the electrical ignition contact switch being worn. The dying part sounds like the ignition switch though. Antenna ring will cause an intermittent engine kill right after start-up.
