'91 740 auto/non-turbo won't run

Post by TommyB »

My 91 740 auto/nonturbo w/184K miles has the Regina Fuel Pump system, where there is only one pump that is in the tank. The car won't keep running. When I turn the key the fuel pump will cycle, which is an everytime occurance with the Regina system. The car will start, run a few seconds, then die like it is starving for gas. When I get it started, I can rev it up to 3K or more RPM, but it will then just die. Thinking that the fuel pump relay may have a start-side and a run-side, I replaced the relay with no change in results. I was advised that the ignition switch was faulty, this swap also gave no change. The latest advise is that my control unit located in the passenger kick panel may have a fault. I was told to disconnect the ground from the fuel pump and run this ground wire directly to the negative side of the battery as the ground for the "run" of the fuel pump goes through the control unit. Does this sound logical? The car broke down 200 miles from home. It is parked in the driveway of a relative so it is safe, but that relative has no mechanical skills. I want my next trip to be the one that brings the car home. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Not on my wiring diagram. It is near the tank. As the pump does run I can't see how the ground (earth) could be the fault unless it is a bad connection only giving intermittent contact.

Have you checked for fault codes using the on board diagnostic unit?

Also check the coolant temp sensor; ignition and sensor wires for good contact and the throttle switch and its connector.

Also take a look at this: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/E ... mptoms.htm. It is very helpful for many conditions.
