Hello, I am trying to find some help on a bit of a specific problem I've encountered.
TL/DR I'm swapping the dash from S60 to V70, vin plates are different, how do I take the VIN from V70 dash, so the new dash has the proper VIN?
I have an '04 S60 and an '04 V70R. I'm swapping the entire dashboard from the S60 in to the V70, but I forgot about the VIN plates on the front left of the dash. Is there any way that I'd be able to swap these over, would I have to bring the 2 dashboards to a Volvo Dealership and have them do it, as the rivets holding them in have the Volvo logo on them.
As a side note, I already have the dash out of the S60, I haven't pulled the dash from the V70R yet.
I personally don't have an issue with the VIN's not matching up, but I'm not sure if that's illegal and would probably lower the resale value.
Any help is appreciated, I would like to do this as professional as possible.

Swapping the VIN plate from one dashboard to another can be legally tricky, as tampering with or altering a VIN plate is illegal in many regions. The best approach is to consult your local DMV or a Volvo dealership to ensure compliance with regulations.
If the VIN plate is riveted with Volvo-branded rivets, a dealership may be required to replace it professionally. Some areas may allow an official reattachment with documentation, but doing it yourself could raise legal concerns and affect resale value.
Check your local laws before proceeding, and if needed, seek professional assistance to ensure everything is done properly.

On a P80 it is held on with push pins, so easy to swap without damage. I guess the move to P2 they went to high security (?) rivets!
I'd also add, that if you were changing the Vin# to one other than the car it is to be on then that is tampering. Displaying the correct Vin is not tampering.
Neil.

If you can access the upset (backside) of the rivets just grind them off and pop everything apart. Reassemble the pieces on the new dash with epoxy holding the plate and, what’s remaining of, the rivets in place.

Just curious, how long did it take for you to remove the dashboard? Was there any tricky parts to the removal?

Totally agree on asking state DMV about such issue. Even in states like NY which require yearly inspection, vin is being read by machine via obd so should not create no issue. Worst possible scenario- just have a copy of receipt from salvage yard or seller from where you obtained the part as a proof that it was not stollen etc in case some particularly great officer will ask questions
