CV Questions

Post by dandanboi25 »

Hi everyone,
The passenger cv shaft in my c70 has started to go and needs replacement and I had a few questions.
Does the cv from the 850 fit the c70? Or are the dimensions different.
I have seen mentions of people rebuilding their own cvs and I was wondering if there was a kit to do this?
Many thanks
Dan

When you say the axles are starting to go, what do you mean? Are they clicking/clunking when turning or rotating, or is it just the CV boots that are bad?

What is the mileage on the axles/car and are they Volvo originals.

Is your C70 an turbo or not and what year is it? If it is a 99- the axles cannot be swapped as the -98 use a nut to hold the axle in place, but the 99- use a bolt to hold it in place on the hub. I don't recall if you can interchange them using the correct hardware for the axle.

Typically you can fit turbo axles to non-turbo cars but not the other way around.

Some early 850's had a different number of splines on the hub end.

Is the car a 4 speed auto or 5 speed auto, or is it a manual?

So lots of things to check.

Neil.

I know nearly all here on the forum recommend Volvo OEM, but I’ve had good results with TRQ CV shafts for pretty reasonable prices. Can always keep/rebuild the originals for spares.

Thankyou for the swift responses.
I probably should have given some more info, its a 2000 c70 coupe t5, 270k km, 4 speed auto aw50 and I am fairly sure its an oem cv. Currently The cv creaks/clicks upon engaging/disengaging the throttle and has recently started clicking while turning.
Wondering what the process for rebuilding a cv is like and where I can get the parts from?
Many Thanks
Dan

It will need a 1999 2000 axle , the - 1998wont fit. A breakers yard is a good source for a solid part.

How would you know if the axle is good if you pull it from a yard?

Technically you don't. But if the boot is not torn, then I usually take the bet that the axle is good.
