2005 xc90 t6 nasty noises from rear drive [ bad rear wheel bearing, 2 hour job]

Post by 57gretsch »

Sporadic clunking, squeeling, and otherwise very nasty noises occuring.
ABS code for left rear.
Pulled it apart today. Found grease build up on the sensor from a bad wheel bearing. It seems fine on inspection not a lot of play. Still, grease is there. No grinding in the bearing.
The driveshaft has a lot of play. I am thinking this is the culprit. My spare is larger than what came out.
So, if i just remove those shafts...how does that affect the ABS?

Remind me please if reluctant wheel is a part of the axle vs it is the integrated part into the wheel bearing. If to imagine that picture search that I found is correct. Reluctant wheel should be a part of wheelbearing. Nevertheless, if to imagine that both sensor and cogwheel and wires are intact- you should be all good in terms of Abs light. However, what will happen with rear diff if the axels will not be there? How do you plan to plug the holes in the rear diff unless you plan to remove entire rear diff+haldex+driveshaft. Possibly doing all that and removing fuse to the haldex system would limit Christmas tree on a dash to just vdsc light or awd. I would vote for proper fix which will be new bearing and used axle(if your diagnosis on both is correct)

Well, turns out it was not a bad axle but a bad wheel bearing. On the rear bearings, the ABS sensor ring is integral with the rear of the bearing. This had failed and was separated from the bearing. Hence the nasty noises.
New wheel bearing and all is good.

Did the work myself. It took about 1 1/2 hours. With a beer break.
