Apparently that housing was where the leak was coming from. Sealed and no leaks.
Took it for a short drive. Drove really well. Some hesitation, but I'm not expecting perfection. Fuel gauge wasn't working at first but then started to. I thought that the tank was empty, so I went ahead and added 5gal of gas before I left. But the gauge shows apx 1/2 tank, so that means that I have some bad fuel in there. As I realized that, the car started to miss a little and the idle dropped. Check engine light came on.
So I'm going to add more good premium fuel to cut this stuff further.
And I think I hear a little lower end clatter when coming off throttle, but I can't really tell yet.
So good fuel is next before anymore diagnostics.

That engine is way too clean for me! Engine sounds sweet at this point. Bad fuel can easily make stuff run bad as you are finding out. Maybe add a fuel injector cleaner to the gas before next run. Your bottom end noise may just be pinking/knock from bad fuel.

Working with clean components can make the difference between a fun job or a miserable job ( plus I can find leaks easier ). Besides I had the time
Reset the timing belt tensioner and pumped out all of the gas, but now I think I should get a fuel filter, considering that its been sitting for 4 years. Probably jelly inside at this point.

Just to update on this project.
After slugging it out with a P0014 code ( timing ), the car is running beautifully ! Fresh premium gas and a new filter helped as well.
Now it needs some little stuff that was neglected over the years, like the front engine mount, but plenty of time for that.
In the end, this $100 car has cost me another $1600 in parts, plus the parts I had around the shop ( R manifold, plugs and injectors etc ).
But boy does she get up and go ! Typical sweet Volvo ride.
Now it's time to start on the interior

I still like the LPT motor as the best all around standard motor in P80 cars. I am amazed at the work you have put into the project in relatively a short timeframe. Car looks great and sounds like you have the snagging to work through as per any older car.
Amazing!

In for its 500 mile check up. The only issues I have noticed are a slight stuttering sometimes when I give it light throttle off of the line.
Most of the time it doesn't happen. I've solved the issue for now by wearing my heavy boots.
Other issue is a small oil drip coming off of the pan around the turbo area. I haven't rolled under yet to take a look, but I'm guessing it has to be either a turbo connection or the pan seal itself. Hoping it's not that, but easy enough if it is.

Went about trying to find the oil leak. I wiped everything down and let the car idle for 1/2 hour, giving it varied throttle. Tried getting the turbo to engage as well. Rolled underneath while it was idling and could not find a leak. Let it sit for a bit and repeated. Still no leak.
So while I was glad that it looked like I wouldn't have to drop the pan, I still knew there was a leak somewhere. Enter saw dust.
I threw a good bit of it on the back of the engine, and took it for a quick spin around the block. Back under it, and mystery solved.
