2011 S80 no crank

Post by DrawThree »

Hi - new user here trying to troubleshoot a no crank issue with my 2011 S80. The car had been sitting unused for a couple of months when I noticed the headlights came on by themselves one night. I went out and there was a low battery warning and the car would not crank. The next day I was able to jump start the car and get it running and drove it for about an hour that day. I also noticed that there was water in the footwells and mice had got into the car. I tried to start the car a couple days later and found that the battery had gone completely dead. I pulled the battery and put it on a trickle charger and didn't get back to it for a couple of weeks. I reinstalled the battery expecting the car to start but it wont crank - when I push the start button I hear a relay click near the passenger footwell area and the radio turns off but the car doesn't crank. Here are the things I've checked so far:

-- Fusable links at the battery are good
-- Checked all fuses and relays under hood and in the passenger footwell
-- Have looked all over for chewed wires from mice but have not found any
-- Pulled connectors from ECM and CEM looking for water or corrosion but they are clean
-- Pulled starter relay under hood and used wire to jump the connection - car turns over fine but wont start

I bought an icarsoft code scanner that supports Volvo and have the following codes:

-- U016700 Lost communication with vehicle immobilizer control module
-- B102694 Steering column lock. Component failures. Unexpected operation.

I'm not sure where to go from here and was hoping someone might have suggestions for other things to look at.

Thanks for any help!

Thought of another thing that may be relevant - it seems the car doesn't always go into full sleep mode. This morning I noticed the two LCD displays inside the speedometer and RPM gauges were both still illuminated even though I had ejected the key and exited the vehicle at least 16 hours prior. Also the LCD on the right has consistently had a "Steering Failure, Stop Safely" message but I've assumed that's because the car isn't running.

Does anyone know if the steering column lock actuator is programmed to the car? I'm considering trying to replace it to clear the "B102694 Steering column lock" code but I'm not sure if it can just be replaced or if it would need to be programmed to the car.

After doing some additional digging I'm pretty sure the SCL is programmed to the car and that it can only be programmed one time so if you replace it you have to buy a brand new one. While doing that digging though I came across discussion of SCL emulator modules which sound interesting. They claim that no programming is required to use them which I think suggests that it's not the ECM or CEM that decides if the car will talk to the module (or emulator), it must be the module (or emulator) itself that decides if it will talk to the car.

Does anyone have experience with the SCL emulators and can anyone confirm that they actually work without requiring programming?

Problem was small bits of corrosion on the CEM circuit board. Cleaned, reinstalled, car started right up.
