Yes, I was going to remove the brake shoes to test, but the wheel spins much more freely with the brake pads removed, no rubbing sounds, the rotor comes right off without a struggle, and no evidence of the parking brake shoes getting glazed or worn down.
What did you do to your Volvo today? Topic is solved

Replaced the fuel pump on the 98' S70 yesterday after confirming that there is no fuel pressure. The car still won't start. And yes, I dropped in another good pump relay before.

Did you give the pump time to prime?
A full tank may help priming.

Forgot to do the compression test with pedal to the metal.
Last time the test was taken an hour after a drive.
This time I had it idling for 10mins or so. Seems there’s not much difference between throttle open or closed.
Found out that at startup cilinder 4 is running real rich or there’s some seal leak, because the spark plug was greasy. After the compression test I drove around for a bit and parked the car. In the evening I pulled the greasy plug again and it was milky white again like the rest.

You may have a leaky injector or valve oil seals on that cylinder.

Another hour on Evita AC getting fittings off, but the Eagle has landed and it’s time to install shiny new parts and new Volvo bolts everywhere

Worked on my single mum friend's much loved 98 V70 base. Car now has 130k miles on it. Still pretty low. She loves this car and it has a lot of maintenance from me and others over the years. Looking at the underside while up on the lift, the car has had good parts fitted due to free labor from me and low cost when my buddy the ex-Volvo mechanic is available.
Car has Bilstein shocks and struts, new coil springs at the front, donated slotted and vented front rotors and newish pads, and I have just replaced the rears with Brembo pads and rotors and aftermarket parking brake shoes.
A repair shop has also recently replaced the leaky steering rack and the inner and outer tie rods were done in the last year as well as the boots.
So all-in-all not a bad old car. The main issue was a clunking when been driven believed to be from the rear. Having checked everything that I think can be a source, I couldn't find anything and also checked the parking brake cables were free.
I did notice immediately a clunk, but not from the front as I was tidying up yesterday. My son was helping me set the parking brake and when he got out of the car and slammed the door closed, there it was! The infamous driver's door lower rear window guide clunk! Oh, joy.....
I fortunately had a used spare let in the stash so today I fitted it. Been a while since I last did one, but it turned out to be a real swine. Every task, even the simple ones fought every step. I even had the steel rivet by chance, but when I went to use my rivet gun it would not look at it. It has a steel center pin and it would not pull it and the handles started to bend. So I ended up substituting a small bolt nut and washer to keep it in place.
Anyway, after a lot of Engineering Technical words of encouragement it finally went pack together.

^ If Abscate Breakers is in business, I'm still looking for a few parts for the V70 rebuild. Specifically the turn signal stalk and a cup holder ( of course ) if you have them.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

Reading through some topics on the valve oil seals, I think it’s that.
There’s some smoke on startup and when stationary at the lights.
The fumes from the exhaust also smells a bit burned. I’ll have to add that to the list of work to be done.
