DIY: CV Joint Removal Tool Follow-Up

Post by cn90 »

As a follow-up...

I finally bought this CV tool on ebay for < $20 ($17 or so).
This is the best investment ever.

Once the circlip is released, slowly crank the tool (I use a piece of old radiator hose as cushion),
and the CV joint comes off like butter.

In the past I had to use the vise and hammer/drift combo, which I hate.
This tool is a must, plus it is so cheap at $17.

Photos of the tool in action (2004 V70 2.5T axles with 110K, preventive CV boot replacement):

The unusual P2 axle design with a hole in the center allows this trick in the video below. The P2 axle has internal threads for the bolts. Many other cars axles use outer threads and nuts (Honda, BMW, or Volvo P80 etc).

Has anyone here tried this trick (using a longer bolt to push the CV joint outwards)?

PS: during the process, make sure you apply a bit of tension, then stop. Play with the circlip, then tighten the bolt a bit more etc.

Honestly always was using 2 big flat screwdrivers or short curved prybars. There are also special fork-like removal tools. I like the idea of this recommend tool since you dont struggle with having enough room to accommodate prybar etc. Great suggestion.

.
The rubber cushion? Is that on the axle once you remove the boot or are you sandwiching a piece of DYI rubber cushion. I purchased the tool from eBay when I saw your post when it first came out. Haven't used it as I didn't have time so purchased cheap complete axles from Rock Auto. This was a couple of years ago also.
.
Blessings,
