ignition sparks but won't start. 1990 740 turbo

Post by nwpinot »

180K 740 wagon began to start hard on two successive occasions, now it won't start.

It has spark. Is there a quick and dirty way to check for fuel?

I'm wondering if it's a fuel pressure problem. If so, are there two pumps? (one feed and one high pressure) or, is there just one?

I have a generic fuel pressure guage. Where is the fuel port? What should the operating pressure be?

Thanks all for the suggestions!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Before going all technical with ways to check fuel pressure try flicking the fuel pump relay with your finger. It is a fairly common problem on these cars. If it now starts you should replace the relay.

On your car you have an on-board diagnostic unit which you can use to check for any fault codes that have been set.

See: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... c&start=12 for location and use. Ignore the heading as it relates to your car as well.

If you are still having problems post back.

Bill.
