Wife's super clean garage kept 04 v70 is needing an engine rebuild at 280k miles. She'd rather me refresh the drivetrain than get something newer.
I'm not seeing cam bearings in the rebuild kits so my question is how are the heads and cam dealt with during an overhaul.
I have past experience with two good machine shops for block/crank/rod work. But this will be my first non pushrod rebuild.

I have no idea of the quality of the parts as I'm just starting this pursuit.
VTI - I intend to zero time it. New bearings, rings and if needed oversize pistons, resized rods and crank grinding. Won't know till it comes apart and I mic it. Doesn't look like these OHC engines have cam bearings.
Do you know of a quality head shop recommendation?
The 04 has been garage kept with regular maintenance so a lot of low time parts will transfer (PCV, exhaust cam phaser, engine mounts). While 280k miles, the body and interior are clean enough to drop a fresh power plant in. Once the electrical gremlins (can bus issue) were resolved, these things are cheap to maintain.
The wife's 04 Volvo (in the background) is number two in the queue. I'll start that project after I complete the 08 Ford 6.4 PSD I'm currently rebuilding.

Do the measurement and decide where to go next, yes. The bores can't be re-sleeved, unless you go with exotics like Darton.
No cam bearings. If the head is warped too bad, you'll see wear on the valve cover.
I did the head in my own garage, on the IKEA table. Not a rocket science, just take your time. OTC 4572 spring compressor, straight edge and a piece of flat thick polished glass is all special tools that were really needed.

Use a factory Volvo brand head gasket if you do the rebuild. I have had 4 FCP Euro head gaskets from Victor Reinz fail. The rubber coating they use is thicker and more flexible than the OE coating and wears away after about 40,000 miles resulting in a very slow coolant leak into the combustion chamber(s). These gaskets have had blue printing for "Victor Reinz" on the gasket surface. I am working with a guy that formerly worked for a gasket manufacturer and he said the aftermarket coating quality from the OEM suppliers is definitely lower than the original equipment to save money.
