Does the "985" stamp mean it was manufactured in 2009?

My coils were stamped 9837 which means 37 week of 1998 - probably original to production date of the car, late 1998, 1999 model year

Might have time to swap in a used turbo control valve today to use the parts cannon approach

What makes you think it may be the TCV and not the ETM? The problem 07 C30 T5 I was trying to help with had an occasional surging idle at rest (not noticed while moving). It has had a used and a brand new TCV and no change. Still turns up randomly. The issue may not be the same for your car I appreciate. Do you have a spare ETM for an LPT engine? If not I am sure I do. Can't do anything for a week though until I get back to Calgary.

Straight swap. Unfortunately as you and I predicted it is the likely cause. PITA to swap on a turbo, but not too terrible. Good luck!

Update. The temps have fallen into the civilised 5-15 Celsius and the surging has stopped. My guess is it’s temperature sensitive to the ETM, so I’ll drive and monitor this winter
