Can air pump affect running?

Post by RonJeffries »

My '98 V70R is throwing codes because its air pump is wedged. The part is about $300, so on the assumption that it wouldn't affect running, I've been putting off getting a new pump until I hit the lottery. But I found somewhere on the Web something that makes me think maybe the ECU knows the pump is down and changes the way it manages the engine.

What I'm seeing is a tendency to falter in heavy-throttle acceleration at high revs. It'll like rev to 5500, and just hang there, not even upshifting until I back off the throttle.

Does the pump affect performance in some odd way? Or does that behavior sound like some other problem you've heard of?

Thanks!

I'd be surprised if it did affect performance. It's an emissions piece, and is only used at startup to re-route air, from what I've read.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

I had the impression that it feeds air to the exhaust to help in burning off unused fuel or something like that. When the car throws codes about it, it's during operation. I've never had it code during starting.

For whatever reason, the car seems to not want to rev past about 5500 lately. It's bringing me down. :)
