I need to warn you about valet key minutiae...

- In 99% of the time, you will be fine but...
- If the wiring loom feeding the trunk is cracked, there is no electrical signal to the trunk actuator and license plate bulbs...you cannot open the trunk using the rubber pad near the license plate.
- Ditto for dead battery.
- Ditto if you purposely disconnect the ground cable when parking at airport for long trip. I found out the hard way, brought the valet key on a trip, parked car at airport, disconnected battery ground cable. Upon returning, could not open the trunk mechanically (by inserting the key to the cylinder above the license plate). Had to find a long hook and access from the rear cabin.

Car mfgs should offer a full-service key w/o Fob for those who don't care about Fob or those who try to save money.

If you only have a Valet key, keep a coat hanger (the metal type) in the cabin. This can be used as a hook to open the trunk (from the rear seat opening) if your car battery is dead!

Best is to make this hook tool ahead of time.

PS: you can also tie a string to the trunk interior release handle and feed the string to the rear seat. Only for emergency.

Meanwhile, I will look into that datatransferring.com. That might also offer an alternative, as I see valet key blanks for sale.

@abscate: Apple Airtags sound like a good idea!
up here on the redneck riviera we use the android tile, poor man airtags, on the keyring.

The S60 has a great feature with a little key-bypass hole right above the plate. Manually opens trunk

I have used Yagger at Data Transferring to program spare keys for four of my Volvos and twice for friends. I learned about his service from reading this forum. You have to have VIDA and DICE equipment for him to connect remotely and program your car for both the immobiliser and the remote functions. I purchase blank keys off ebay ( https://ebay.us/m/gHc7Fl ) and then use a local locksmith to copy and "laser cut" the pattern. The keys come with a programming code. The cutting process involves milling instead of grinding and I learned that very few locksmiths have the correct machine. I have found two shops in the Detroit area that have the machine. It is $45 each at the nearby shop and $40 at a shop in Dearborn close to Ford's headquarters. If you are going through this process get 3 or 4 spares made. The push button switches wear out, the plastic cases wear out, the spring for the switchblade opening gets sprung, and the programming cost is same with 1, 2, 3, or 4. You can't program a remote that doesn't have a code - don't buy used keys hoping they can be programmed for a P2 Volvo. The difference between the valet key blade and the non-valet blades is in the grooves along the length of the key blade. My XC70 came with only the valet key and I had it copied to two other keys (I should have done 4 keys) and the switchblade keys can open the glovebox. The valet key has V shaped grooves and the switchblade keys have square U shaped grooves. The smaller V shaped groove prevents the key from fitting into the trunk or glovebox.

I also came across a chinese service that cuts new blade from a photo, it was stupid cheap, like $8, I haven't been able to find it again.

Cutting the key is not the issue.
The issue is programming.

PS: go to any local used car dealers, they usually know a local guy that can cut and program keys for Toyota, Honda etc. Euro cars are another issue for these Indy key maker...
