My 98 V70 XC had the canister upfront under the LHF. It also had a manual timing belt adjuster not hydraulic. Typical Volvo hodge-podge during change overs. I have had several Volvos over the last 50 years that naturally always seemed to be on the cusp of a change with hybrid build where the only way to confirm what you had was take the old part off first!

I just didn't see it as a "worthy" contender for all that effort at least right now. Right now the goal has been "budget restoration". There is rot everywhere in the region of the rear subframe. On the steel unibody and the aluminum subframe, holes through the thick aluminum and whatnot, Nivomats at end of life and rotting away, etc. This could easily turn into a months long restoration and ideally if i'm pulling the rear subframe I might as well get a FWD rear end and fuel setup. It's a domino effect I don't want to start right now and the wife doesn't want to see two torn apart cars either lol. I do want to keep it around but I was trying to do the bare minimum to keep it driveable. Maybe one day I'll take this restoration to the next level. Hopefully today or tomorrow I am going to test my theory with that pinched "tank" line that goes to the canister, I really think this could be the problem based on my troubleshootingabscate wrote: ↑07 Jan 2026, 07:09 I did stumble on another thread of someone with a 1998 R which also had evap canister up front and AWD of course.
Are you sure you cant get that back axle down? It is a pain the first time, after that, with new hardware, its not bad at all.
My fuel lines on top were a rusted mess of crap which all had to be replaced - for certain if I had left any piece in it was days from leaking again. NiCopp is cheap - and you can put all the fittings in accessible places, too.

Do you remember of it was square evap canister or round ? It looks like the XC went to the square one up front then moved it to the back. The mounting plate on the AWD axle had to be designed too.scot850 wrote: ↑07 Jan 2026, 08:21 My 98 V70 XC had the canister upfront under the LHF. Thanks for that info Bryan…. Mid 1998 model year, so I’m guessing hydraulic timing tensioner
I hear you on that rear axle. When Neil did his it crumbled into dust.
Mod note - added info to thread title.

My tensioner is not hydraulic. Did it half a year ago. Actually the PO sold me the car with a timing belt kit and I was disappointed to find that it was hydraulic and not compatible.
The canister is square. Very easy to drop down up front. And I believe it also says “GM” on the top. As in General Motors lol.

Also, great news. I fixed my gas filling problem! Turns out it was indeed related to a previous repair related to that “over fill” line I think I mentioned earlier. From the factory This is a largish diameter steel line coming from the top of the drivers side rear of the tank. It goes from there following the top of the tank then comes out by the fuel filter. I abandoned the steel line and replaced it with rubber fuel line. Turns out the way I routed it, it was kinked. I had to get a brass 90 degree fitting to make this work. I don’t expect anyone else to have this problem since I chose a unique repair method by cutting holes in my car to avoid dropping the subframe. But it might be helpful for anyone in my situation performing minimum effort repairs
