noisy blower fan

Post by hu5ker555 »

2008 S60 2.5T 253k
When it is cold outside, my blower fan is noisy. Rattles and hums for the first 15 mins or so until the car warms up. Then it is quieter.
How can I access the fan and spray it with something?

I don’t know if this works for a P2, but I saw this video a while back.

You need to remove it and then you can spray some lube into the bearings. There's plenty of instructions on this site for how to remove the fan, its not too difficult. Most have successfully silenced a noisy fan this way, I think the new fans are around $200 now.

It is already warming up, you can forget about it until next winter! ;)

The bushing (basically a bearing) needs oil to run smoothly.
Lack of oil ---> shaft seizing ---> may need a new blower motor.

On my S60, the blower motor started whistling in the winter of 2018. I still haven't replaced it (viewtopic.php?p=643927&hilit=garage#p643927). Sound never got much worse, and it makes no noise at all in warm months. Just one data point and YMMV, but FYI.

Looks like your sound system's volume level is not up to the task. I, for example, can't hear whining of the rear left wheel bearing (AGAIN???), not until spring.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.
