Radio problems with my 2002 Volvo S60

Hello, I have a 2002 Volvo S60 2.4T. A couple of years ago I started having radio problems, when I would have my radio on, the volume would fluctuate up & down constantly, but would be OK if I was playing a CD. So obviously the problem wasn't with the speakers. I finally bought a used radio off of Ebay, the buyer provided the VIN from the car the radio came from. My husband took my car to a local car audio shop and had the radio installed, and it worked great! While my husband was driving my car home, the SRS airbag warning light came on & he realized the steering wheel controls no longer worked for the stereo. So then we tried the Volvo dealership. The service guy said he could try reloading the software but he didn't think it would work, he also said he didn't need the VIN from the old vehicle. There was no mention of any code needed for the radio. So he tried reloading the software & turned off the SRS airbag warning light. It didn't work, the steering wheel controls still don't work & I also realized when driving my car last night that some of the lights on the radio are not working. I think there were lights around the knobs & button, the only thing that is working is the display. The dealership said I would need a new radio & gave me a price of $465! My husband suggested getting an aftermarket radio, but I'm a simple girl & just want the basics & my steering wheel controls to work! Can anyone help me out with any suggestions?

I believe whatever electrical units you use in your Volvo have to be married to your car with a software download...I know they tried reloading the software, but I don't believe that's your issue- a dealer needs to pair the car with the radio- ask about this at another dealer as apparently the one you took it to didn't do the right procedure (at least this is what I think). If you take the radio out again, disconnect the battery with the key in position II and when you hook the battery up again, also have the key in position II. This will keep the SRS light from being tripped again. Good luck and let us know what you find. Worst case, it seems that if lights are out on the radio, you could use the old radio as parts for the "new" one.

If the dealer did a successful "AUM reload" but the steering wheel controls don't work, and the radio (AUM) and the steering wheel module (SWM) have no DTCs logged, then it's reasonable to conclude that there's something wrong with the replacement radio. Do you still have the old one? If you swap it in, do the steering wheel controls work? The AUM reload programs the radio to the car, there is no additional programming indicated by VIDA as being needed for this.

I'm sitting here with replacement radio hanging and steering controls not working. I'm doing the swap because one channel of my cassette player doesn't work also the volume up and down was a bit cranky and where it wouldn't go the right direction so here I am with a replacement and I'm going to swap back to see if the controls resume working so the answer is yes then I have to decide what the heck to do
