Heck, worth a shot based on the price of a blue box part! Please keep us updated as perhaps they have improved the quality of their part which would be great news! Thanks.

Neil.
Thanks Neil!

I did not know this about KAE, never even heard of them. I am keeping an old good one as a spare in the glove compartment just in case.

I have not been keeping up very well on the forums, but have been continuing to work on my Volvos, and now numerous new acquisitions of friends. On my own car, I've gone through three rear suspension stay bars on the AWD and now my alignment is all out of whack.
Friends have picked up a 2000 V70XC SE, 1998 V70XC, and a 1996 850 wagon. And we got a 1998 V70XC parts car.

What is the current move for a malfunctioning ETM for a 2000 Volvo? Appears it got fried suddenly, not the usual slow death. We have a spare ETM but not the ECU it went to, and information seems to have changed so much regarding this.

Other than the ETM its a great car, came missing the driveshaft but good service history, 170k~ miles, passed the glove test, etc. It drove perfectly fine for months until recently when the downpipe fell off at the turbo flange, and when everything was fixed and put back together it had this issue.

If you have an ETM from the same engine type (ie. a 2000 V70XC is an LPT engine) you can swap in one from another LPT engine.

If you connect the ETM cable and switch the ignition on to Posn II, you should see/hear the throttle butterfly cycling initially.

After kids and wife went to bed (about 11pm) I went out in the dark and did the oil cooler delete and swapped the summer tires/wheels onto the car. Even got the oil cooler lines out of there, without jacking up the engine or anything!

My thoughts: It is hard, but not impossible, to get that bolt off holding the lines to the front of the engine. I used a 1/4 drive socket and a wobble extension. Got a few scrapes on the backs of my hands. It is nearly impossible to get the little retaining plate off the front of the oil thermostat without moving the engine or removing the thermostat from the car! I got it with a Torx bit in the box end of a 7mm wrench. Not fun, that part! Oil cooler lines released from the rad no problem, but oil spilled all over, luckily mostly caught in a well-placed drain pan.

I got the block-off plate from an unlikely source: a junkyard 1997 S90 inline six!! Only late 90s Volvo in my usual haunt although they did have a 240 and a LOT of 2000s xc70 cars. Block-off plate came right off, luckily, because I had to attack the Torx from slightly off-angle due to the fat crank pulley/balancer assembly on these cars.

ANYWAY. I put it together and all was good, in bed by 2am and up at 7 for toddler swim lessons! Also scored a free Britax "Clicktight" car seat with lots of life left on the clock. Washed the upholstery and belted in. No isofix/LATCH on the P80, but the Britax Clicktight seat belt lockoff system works well with the funny Volvo buckle-based belt lock system. Much better than the Graco, which I transferred to my Honda, where it plays well with the traditional "pull the belt all the way out and it ratchets in" system. Side note, the Britax also weighs about twice as much as the Graco. A good match for the Volvo!

Upgrades to the kid hauler all around. Our toddler knows my Honda is a car, but often he refers to the Volvo as a bus!

Next up will be PS lines, rad, coolant hoses, heater core, and trans cooler. And while I was swapping the wheels I noticed that one of the parking brakes doesn't work. I think it just needs adjustment, unless the lining has come unglued. But I cannot remove the disc without adjusting it the other way. I will get it, one way or another. There is always something, isn't there. :(

Once you open up the back rotors on a new to you Volvo, count on replacing those shoes and hardware. The shoes generally delaminate over 5 years. Try to use Volvo parts if your keeping the car long term, and FCP will pay for most of the next replacement , of course

Yeah, I think I redid them about 5 or 6 years ago! No recollection where I bought the parts, but probably it was Rockauto. My wife and I have had this car since 2012 or so. We are the second owners. Started with only 65k on the clock, now up to almost 200. But I think I've done the dang parking brakes twice? Three times? As you say, you get 5 years, give or take. I know I can get the discs off by messing with the adjusters through the little hole.

After almost a month waiting for the new top thermostat housing to arrive, it turned into a proper ordeal.

The bolt towards the front rounded out, made worse and more ironic considering I ordered a new pair less than 2 years ago specifically to avoid rounding/siezing.

I drilled out the head, pulled off the cover, only to find that the threads weren't enough to use multiple nuts to unthread it.

After using epoxy on said nuts and finally getting it off I have it back together using bolts with 10mm heads that I believe are from the distributor or similar. ,

There's still a slight leak. I'll install the extra paper gasket I have and run it like that while waiting for parts.

Current shopping list:
Thermostat
Lower thermostat housing
2 lower thermostat housing as per tsb
Radiator hoses
Hoses from the coolant reservoir
Intake manifold gasket

Anything I might be missing? Would really suck to miss a small thing and have to wait a month.

Current shopping list:
'97 950 T-5 Wagon
'89 and '95 Daihatsu Feroza
