What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

For #2 - Alarm module has died. It takes out the sunroof. Now it could be the sunroof motor too, but I doubt it.

First I checked the #34 fuse at the end of the dash. 15A. I took a tiny file to it and just cleaned up the aluminum, sunroof works normal!

On my way back from the automotive bulb supplier specialist, it meant I had to drive back near the junkyards I go to. There was a 08 S60 just in so I had taken tools to scavenge a few parts, including the inner door panel clips. I had planned to go to another yard with an 05 S60 that was fairly recent, but I realized I had already seen it and it had been stripped of anything of value.

One of the faults the 06 V70 throws is a code for the brake vacuum pump being out of spec. I decided as I had the tools I would look to pull another pump and the valve. Thinks quickly escalated!

So also a pair of headlight washer sprayers added to the pile as well as a few other smaller sensors from the engine bay. There was also a pair of Bi-Xenon headlights that looked like they may have been 3M clear film covered from new. On removal one had 2 of the bolt mounts damaged but I can fix those fairly easily. I paid for the bulbs on the assumption they are good. I also brought home the center stack as it had a nice wood surround and a HU-650 head unit. I could not be bothered to try to pull the Bi-Xenon button from the center stack, and the head unit I plan to use to make up a P2 head unit additional capability to add to the P80 test kit I already have. Once I have tested the head unit I can then sell it on as a working unit or keep it as a spare for our son's XC70 in case his fails.

I also pulled a trunk tailgate seal for a C30 for my buddy as one of his 2 C30's has a cut in the seal allowing it to leak.

So all-in-all a good trip!

I usually bring a lunch and I have been known to fall asleep in a car there on a warm day after eating it

I just have high school memories of cold and mud and angry dogs behind fences, and very uncooperative creepy guys at the counter. But I think that business model has changed and they understand they can make good money if they make it simpler / safer for buyers.

I've been to a few where you don't touch the cars, everything is stripped and cleaned and tagged on shelves. You have to trust them as far as which year and model it actually came off of.

I have done both of those variants of junkyards over the years. The former is thankfully mostly a thing of a past as you say due to the reach of the internet and realization being more friendly sells more parts and likely return customers.

The 2nd version is where things are going, along with them having EBay stores (Erie Vo-Vo now doing this). Again larger national and international sales and bigger viewing audiences. I still prefer to go see stuff for myself. I like to see if the car was written off for example as changes are many mechanical parts are good (or were good) prior to the accident. Rear ended cars are the best for this.

It is not of coarse a 100% guarantee, and unfortunately you have no idea of the car's mileage. Mind you don't either as you say when buying parts from a breaker that claims that car had a certain mileage.

I also enjoy seeing older cars from the past. Last visit there was a 1980 Triumph TR7 for example. A rare car here.

when i lived in boston i loved to spend the day at hollands salvage, met a lot of brickheads there.

I replaced the coolant tank on my 2001 V70 T5. It may have been original tank. It presented with falling coolant level with no obvious leak. I confirmed by placing a rag at the tank seam. When the rag got sticky from coolant, I ordered a new tank.
Tip for others replacing this tank. Just cut the front ring where the power steering tank hook hangs on the tank. This is easier than tying to unclip the hook.
