Thank you all for the feedback you've provided. The correct spec fluid is already ordered and we're right now waging reservoir cleaning vs. buying the 2005 to retrofit.
Will keep you updated!

Its only a matter of time. The pre 2005 failure is the snorkel inside of the reservoir which rots away over time and either causes a catastrophic leak or an obstruction in flow. Both are bad for the rack which you dont want to replace. Like ever.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I just ordered 2 Magnefine 3/8" filters. Both the ATF and PS fluid are due for a change so I'll add on these filters. I already have one on the ATF return line but will be the first time PS fluid hose is getting one. For fluids I use Pentosin CHF 202 PS fluid and Volvo ATF. I change the ATF quite often so I'll just use the drain bolt. For the PS fluid after disconnecting the hoses I'll use the long tubes on the fluid extractor to remove most of the PS fluid.vtl wrote: 19 Mar 2026, 09:42 I cut a rubber portion of the return line and added a 3/8" (10 mm) Magnefine filter in there.
It also helps installing a heat shield over steering rack to protect it from the exhaust heat. Volvo had it for earlier model years. I bought one for my 2005, but it does not fit.

I did not know turning the wheel will pump oil out, having done the frantic “ power flush” a few times , that’s good to know.

Yeah,
Been there done that with engine running lol. I stop doing that, it is too dangerous.
I then turn SW with wheels on the ground, then discover that with a floor jack lifting front subframe, tires don't have to leave the ground, as long as some weight off the ground then it is easy to turn SW.
With everything so expensive now, and dealer charging $180-$200/h, idk how ppl can afford to pay for car repairs.

That’s also brilliant and much safer getting in and out.I then turn SW with wheels on the ground, then discover that with a floor jack lifting front subframe, tires don't have to leave the ground, as long as some weight off the ground then it is easy to turn SW.
A jacked up car with two front wheel contact points isn’t going anywhere

Fluid extractor makes it a breeze. And they are real cheap now. And you need one for unmodified bevel gear and rear differential, which have no drain holes.abscate wrote: 21 Mar 2026, 13:17That’s also brilliant and much safer getting in and out.I then turn SW with wheels on the ground, then discover that with a floor jack lifting front subframe, tires don't have to leave the ground, as long as some weight off the ground then it is easy to turn SW.

Finally got around to adding the Magnefine filter onto the PS return hose after siphoning out most of the PS fluid. After taking this picture I wrapped the filter with heavy duty aluminum foil.vtl wrote: 19 Mar 2026, 09:42 I cut a rubber portion of the return line and added a 3/8" (10 mm) Magnefine filter in there.

I also replaced the Magnefine filter on the ATF return hose.
Next drive I'll see if the high pitched squealing goes away while taking those slow sharp turns. First time I changed the PS fluid in 48k miles.
UPDATE: No squealing during the drive today. There was no air in the system. The fluid was just past it's changing date. I got it marked to change it next at 30k miles.

Hi y'all, so the flush went really good and the all over steering effort reduced to a reasonable amount now.
The fluid was worse than anything I saw so far.
Anyhow it is uneven with some occasional increases of steering force. Spikes.
Needless to say this is NOK to drive as a family car.
We have a spare P/S pump which we try to see if that's is the culprit. Worst case is that the steering gear has taken damage over the years of neglectance. Bummer

Have you replaced intermediate steering shaft? A small shaft with U-joint between steering rack and steering column.MotorTheresa wrote: 06 May 2026, 21:53 Hi y'all, so the flush went really good and the all over steering effort reduced to a reasonable amount now.
