2005 Catherine v70m56 rear brake pads, rotors, parking brake shoes

Knocked this job off today. 4 hours in driveway.

Chock, block, jack, and post up.
Wheels off
10 mm small screw retains rotors
H7 tool releases caliper bolts.
Use a 11 mm socket to ease bleeder
Two m8 13mm head bolts release caliper bracket.

You don’t back off the parking brake on a p2, all adjustment is at the handle.

My park shoes had disintegrated so my rotors popped off

Clean up that backing plate

Install shoes and then spring clip retainers. These are a little tough as you have to feed the hook end into a hole hidden by the shoe

Insert front brake bar
Make sure wide end of shoe is in actuator.

The two return springs are best installed hooked into the top, put a slight bend on the lower tang so you can pick up the lower groove.

Then is down hill…bracket , pads, caliper. Rotor.
‘Bleed 250 ml fluid through when done

The brake clips on the parking brake shoes are a bit fussy you have to stuff the square bit inthe slot the slide it forward to catch the lip yo lock. You are working blind as it’s hidden by the shoe. It took me a few minutes to get the technique

On the springs, if you put a 28.5 degree angle on the spring with a plier, it’s a lot easier to hook them into the slot/hole on the shoe, under tension. After they go in , you can squeeze them back to parallel with a plier, or not. Obviously , the student will recognize 28.5 degrees as θ /2 = > 3 cos( θ ) ^2 -1 commonly called the magic angle. See picture below.

The shoe end with the deep slot goes toward the front of the car. The flat plate with the two slots mates up with these slots on top and bottom both shoes are identical with respect to both top/bottom and left right. You have four identical pieces in the box

You don’t have the star wheel adjust on the p2, unlike the p80. Adjustment is done at the handbrake lever. I didn’t have to adjust mine , I will wait until the bed in before doing that. I’ll add a picture here.

Don’t forget to send back you pieces of brake shoe to FCP!

A working e-brake is important on anM56 - I feel good about getting this all straight again

Pushing 250 ml fresh brake fluid through each caliper preserves their life by keeping the pistons shiny and new

My last set of shoes/pads lasted 32k miles, so I’ll schedule this job for 2033

Breaking news , if you are contemplating this job amd might need a caliper FCP has one side on clearance for $166 , usually $225

bad memories, it was 8 yrs ago, I remember it like it was almost 9 years ago,
I ended up changing everything, both brake cables and the hand brake adjuster section too.
Still couldn't get the new shoes to bite for inspection, I removed and compared to the volvo originals, slightly different, 2 minutes with a grinder fixed that. I ended up installing star wheel type adjusters to tighten them up, drove a bit with the hand brake engaged to bed the shoes, that fixed it. To this day I've never used that brake. They don't bother in Maine. $12 inspection.

I’m guessing you made the great Northern migration from MA to ME ?

Only MA would have an operational parking brake test.

Still dreading changing the backing plate as the little slot for the spring up top rusted off on both sides...

This was quoted as 2.9 hours at Volvo.

That would be $900 at their labour rate. Ouch

Every weekend I am saving about $2,000 of Volvo dealer labor cost. Last weekend was 5 replacement premium speakers on 3 of the cars, new amp, rust protection sprayed inside the doors, and rattles from loose power window rivets fixed. This weekend will be an exhaust flex pipe replacement and a persistent fuel level sensor error code repair on the R. Too bad this Volvo fleet can't be sold for the $400,000 in labor I've provided to keep them all running smooth.
