Dust shields are always worth checking. They corrode around the 3 mounting bolts and then break free. Tends to cause a rattle. Usually a large washer under the head of the bolt will fix that.

I think I might have found the potential cause for the problem. I feel a little stupid for not thinking of this as a cause, wheel alignment! I already knew the alignment wasn't good since the steering wheel has been off to the left since I bought the car, but I just realized that the front wheels are toed out away from each other slightly. This is the exact same alignment problem I had on my V70 when I bought it, although that car didn't make any noise when steering. I'm still going to get the other front wheel bearing replaced next week and immediately after that I will be taking it in for alignment. Hopefully that will solve it.

Let us know if that is the solution. It would be great is it is!

If you already need alignment. Make sure your tie rods are in tiptop shape and balljoints with control arms as well. Alignment is about 120-170 depending on the area, so better pay once then to have to do it after another component fails shortly after.

It WAS the front left wheel bearing! With the bearing connected to the CV axle and the wheel it was hard to tell if it was bad or not but when I disconnected those things and freely spun the bearing with my hand, it sounded absolutely terrible. New SKF bearings installed on the front and the car is now significantly nicer to drive. I had a big smile on my face on the way back home finally getting to experience what this car is actually like. I love it! Next up is to get the alignment done.
