Overheating!

`2013 S60. 70K miles. Got a dash warning to STOP DRIVING...Engine overheating. Fan was on when the A/C was engaged. This happened last year...I changed the thermostat, water pump. What else should I look for? My code reader doesn't pick up any codes (other than door lock issues)....HELP!

Given a "sandwich" of 3 radiators, it is sometimes hard to fully see the extend of the problem. Suggestion from Chrism is the greatest starting point. If you are confident in your skills, i would suggest to remove and wash out radiator and Intercooler. Wash out the condenser attached to ac lines(evacuate, vaccuum, refill refrigirant cost money and if possible, dont go that route). Since you will have radiator out, it will be great opportunity to replace radiator hoses(they are 13-14 years old..., might be an overkill, but it is my preference). Replace thermostat(prepare to swear since it is no longer $20 part held by 2 bolts and gasket, it is "unit" for $160). Replace antifreeze with quality brand(may need to mix yourself with distilled water from local pharmacy)and preferably use vacuum system filler method(optional here since you likely have 2.5. Vs 3.0 and not the new 4cyl engines where such is mandatory). And hopefully no more issies.

What engine do you have in your car? Does the radiator have one or 2 fans?

Recently my friend had issues with his XC60 T6. It has the 2 fans, but I believe the one and 2 fan set ups run similarly. They have 2 feeds. On the 1 fan unit it has 2 signals from the ECM - One to run the fan for the A/C and the 2nd for the coolant fan.

Usual suspects are the coolant temp sensor (I just posted the part number in a thread for the Volvo 'kit', and the fan controller. Be careful using aftermarket parts. My buddy bought an Amazon fan controller and it was wired back to front!

Be careful what aftermarket parts you use, especially from the likes of Amazon!

He confirmed the fans both ran when powered directly, so the fans were good. His coolant temp sensor was reading low so it was not triggering the fan early enough.
