Man, I spent nearly a benji on some tools & fluids. Worth it. We’ve all gotta grow up some day.

My father always strongly advocated for PB over break cleanser, so here it is. + other fun and highly important stuff. Thank you, Abscate & cn90. :)

I have had three stuck cables and two rusted expander mechanisms so far this year (mostly from a V70R that had been parked for 5 years). If the disk rotor won't slide off the parking brake pads nice and easy with the brake lever released, something is sticking. I have a person pull the lever while I watch the drum pads expand to see where the sticking is happening. Either the pivot on the expander is binding from rust or the cable is rusting and binding on the inside of the cable housing. Several years ago I had problems with the frinction material detaching from the brake pads.
I truly appreciate the knowledge! However, there is no parking hardware currently on this side. Upon removal, the cable shortened up. I have new hardware I’d love to install. Alas…

Years ago now I was headed to an event. Getting off Whitehurst Freeway outside Georgetown, my [“brand new” 2001 XC’s] parking break exploded inside the rotor. That was a fun freeway removal, diagnosis, & rush hour drive/reverse experience outside Exxon.

This experience actually may have been my first post on this forum. Hah!

Suffice to say that if anything fishy [a magically shortened cable] happens with my e-brake, I will sooner zip tie that loose line to the rear control arm than attach finicky hardware.

Anyway, I’m so sore. I’ll be back tomorrow evening for a spit.

Thank you again, my gents. Here’s a nearly candid Freya!

It is only finicky as most never service it believing it is a lifelong item, which it naturally is not. Being autos; also no one ever uses them and then they get surprised when they don't suddenly work 10 years later having not used them. Simple maintenance.

P2 cars can have an issue with the rear parking brake assembly where the aluminum peg the parking brake shoes pivot on can corrode and snap off destroying the rear hub. There is now a repair part which is steel and bolts to 2 holes that are conveniently in the rear hub. This tends to be a rust belt issue more than most places.

Delaminating parking brake shoes also happen. A buddy asked what was causing a new rubbing noise on the rear of his car and could I look at it. I said not to bother turning up without a new set pf parking brake shoes. He was surprised when I pulled the rear rotor and one of the shoes fell on the floor.

SOLVED… a failed brake hose.

Propane & propane accessories got the fitting right off.

chrism’s diagnostic to verify caliper integrity was integral to moving forward.

I almost went to rip out the ABS module and send it off before I realized I should get over myself and learn to flame on.

So many thanks to the entire crew here for every thought & piece of knowledge.

Regarding the axle; I turned it 20 degrees and was able to swiftly remove it. *THUD* I then swapped circlips and used some white lithium to hold it in place.

Amusingly enough, it sits just the same as prior noted. Perhaps it’s relevant to the aftermarket machining, though I did compare axles and they looked the same.

Let us all pray together to the Volvo overlord.

I should still send off that ABS module. I suspect y’all will hear from me again once I dig into those diagnostics…el oh el oh el

I just swung by the DMV and am currently at the alignment/inspection shop thanks to all of you.

Thank you, thank you, THANK. YOU.

Peace & happiness. 8)

How did you diagnose failed brake hose?

Some ppl use a grass trimmer reel to poke the inside of the brake hose bc it is ~ 2 mm and I think the brake hose I.D. is ~ 3 mm.

My diagnosis stems from replacing the part, then hot metal no longer go burn burn. :P It bled clean fluid prior to the swap.

Prior to swap, the seized pads would release upon cracking open the bleeder valve.

I think my hwacker string is larger diameter than 2mm. Can knowledge be gained from cutting the old hose in half? I really don’t think I have plans to resuscitate it.
