850 Manual knob question

Hy Guys,

I would like to replace the all knob "section", as shown on the picture. I don't know how the boot - leather part is fixed to the console. Is there a rectangular bracket to clip somewhere ?

Never removed a manual trans gear shift knob. On the auto's the black collar at the bottom of the knob turns about 45 degrees and unclips from the bottom of the knob. Then you pull up hard on the knob and it comes off allowing you to get to the boot.

I have no idea if the manual is the same idea, sorry.

The manual knobs come off the same way. The boot comes out because it has a square shaped círclip type holder inside the leather skirt. Put something non marring between the skirt and the center console and pop it through carefully.

One note, the 850s and early 70 series had a squared off attachment point for the shift knob and the leather cover. The later 70 series had a round collar where they lock into the handle. If you are changing both, it’s not a problem, but if you are getting a round shift knob, the leather won’t connect with the square fitting. I currently have a square knob from a 97 with a round fitting cover from a 99, and they sit together without a gap, but it does look a bit funny since I know to look for it.

Thanks you for this precision. I think the best way to solve that "issue" is to replace the part by a kind of this one :
