95 volvo 850 (not turbo)

hey yall,

a couple weeks ago my freshly purchased 850 stopped starting up. 3/4 tank. new battery. it was diagnosed with a broken fuel pump i decided i would try to replace it myself.

i bought a used fuel pump from ebay and followed the wonderful instructions found here to replace it. after the procedure (which i think went quite well, actually) i tried to start the car with no success. is there anything i might be missing? a special way to re-prime the system (i pulled the fuse to relieve the fuel pressure, but have since replaced it)? actually, even with the key in the ignition powering the car i cannot hear any noise coming from the pump. does this mean the one i bought doesnt work?

i apologize if i left out any details. any help/advice would be appreciated.

frustrated,
chris

guys,
i will go out and remove and check the relay visually but i cant set up a 'jumper wire' (im not that technically inclined). i dont think it is the relay because the car was running fine right up until i drove it into the driveway and removed the pump fuse to relieve the fuel pressure (ie. it had power). the only problem was that i had to start it by hitting the tank with a mallet (this means it was the pump, right?).

woodrocanada,

Having to hit the tank with a mallet to get started usually means that your fuel pump is going. Given the age of our cars, sometimes the fuel relay follows the pump or the relay goes out first.

The jumper wire for the fuel relay testing isn't too hard to do if you follow Ozark Lee's writeup in the links offered above. It's pretty much just a wire connecting two points to keep the fuel pump running so that you can make sure it works.

You still will need to verify if your relay is still good. Maybe you can find a friend with an 850 or someone (maybe on this forum) near you that can let you borrow their working one to try out.

You can also recheck the electrical connections for your fuel pump (the ones right near the pump). Make sure that the connectors are fully connected, some of the wires didn't get crimped when you placed the pump cover back on and then recheck to see if you can hear the pump turn on with the ignition key at Position 1.

Otherwise, you may have received a bad used pump. :(
