2001 XC-70 concerns

Post by marshall »

I bought my 2001 XC wagon about a month ago. I had the car checked out by my mechanic and he gave it a high score. I truly appreciated your warnings on this car but now I am worried that I made a mistake. I have checked many sources of maintaince reports, your pages, and other looking for additional warnings and red flags. Perhaps I am just blinded by my love of the ice blue wagon with that black plastic trim but, I can't find any 2001 "bashing" page with warnings of what can go wrong. Your page has no more problems reported for this year than any other. Still, as I said, I sit with sweat on my brow wondering if I made an error in purchasing this car.

I did find that this car is very sensitive to different tire sizes and even different air pressure as this changes the size, creating excess stress on the all wheel drive system.

I had to have the turbo switch replaced but .... I must be a brain dead ol' fart.... I didn't even know the turbo wasn't working as I keep a soft right foot.

Please.... PLEASE ... Give me a rundown on problems with this year that I should keep an extra careful watch on and when I should trade in on another car.

You need to first post the MILES on your XC
and it's V70XC in 2001 not XC70, that started with the 2003 model
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

By the way.... my Volvo V-70 XC Cross Country with AWD had about 84,000 miles on it when I bought it at the end of September. It now has dang near 86,000 miles. Living in Texas - it just seems that everywhere we want to go is a good distance away. I won't be putting that many miles on it all the time but you know how we men are with new toys.
I have been averaging about 21 mpg in the city.... heck, make that 21 mpg in the small town. On the highway, doing about 65, I get about 27 mpg. My tires are all VIVA C and size 215/65R 16"
As far as repairs go, I had to replace the windshield as on my first day driving to work -- a large stone found its way to my car right in front of my ol' wrinkled face. I had to replace the windshield washer tank and had the turbo switch replaced. Outside of that, I plan on an oil change next week. The oil still looks nice & fresh so I wasn't worried about it right away.
As I said before, perhaps I'm just a lucky one or perhaps the problems are still hiding in my carport waiting to jump out and ruin my day. Please give me a rundown on what to watch for so that .. if I should.. I can trade in my dream car. Thanks

Hello there, I understand your mixed feelings on the XC as I was in the same situation as you a year ago when I baught a 2001 V70 XC.
I did unfortunantley did have the most common problem that people have had with the model the transmission. When I baught the car it had 88miles and the transmission was making clunking noises while shifting. The torque converter and valve body was shot. I had the tranny rebuilt through the aftermarket warranty i had on the car as I baught it through e-bay out of houston texas. $4200 rebuild.
I highly recomend annual tranny flushes on this model. Other than that the car works great and we now have 121 miles on it. Awsome winter car.

Hi there.

I have had my 2001 XC70 for 7 months now and i have had the following replaced.

Right driver shaft
Left and right drive shaft seal
Right Shock mounting
MAF sensor
A/C unit
A/C pressure switch
Repaired radiator
Turbo seal-Very common
Water leak behind the turbo-Very common.

Still a great car, i dont think the previous owner looked after it very well.

I have owned an '01 V70 XC since new. With routine maintenance, car has been excellent. No turbo issues here. Make sure you have a Volvo dealer check it out for all recall service campaigns, of primary importance is the electronic throttle module which has been problematic with this car. Other things to watch include steering/suspension components including tie rod ends and bushings, linkages, etc. You will notice your tires wearing (esp. front) unevenly when these develop problems. You will need a 4-wheel alignment when doing this work. It is also critical that when you replace tires, you do all 4 at the same time - all wheel drive criteria. We have had our timing belt replaced at about 95k miles. Volvo scheduled replacement has it at 102k or so, but if you are keeping and driving the car, better to do it sooner than later.

We have been quite pleased with this car and love it in the winter here in MN.

High cost items to look after for this car

1. Transmission. At 88k miles, probably safe to flush the fluid if you have no history of flush within last 30k. Get software update. Check dealer with your VIN to see if your B4 servo is from a bad batch. Check the lower transmission torque mount.

2. Angle gear. Nearly all these leak slightly. The key is to keep the sufficient fluid level inside. Pull the fill plug, stick a screw driver in angled down and see if you have oil just below the filler hole. Do this at every oil change to make sure sufficient fluids.

I left a bunch of info on these items here

http://www.freewebs.com/howardsvolvos/driveline.htm

As for other things at 88k miles, 90k service is due soon, timing belt is 7 years or 105k miles. You might also need to deal with various worn out suspension items at this mileage which include front/rear struts, inner/outer tie rods, spring seats, and front lower control arm bushing.
