I'm sure the rest of the gents on this forum will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all Volvo 5-cyl engines have hydraulic lifters and therefore do not require valve adjustment. Your tick is likely lifter tick caused by either low oil pressure or worn lifters. Does it go away if you rev the engine above 1300 rpm? If so, you likely need to install the oil pan o-ring kit (Volvo 30750783).

Normal... What weight oil are you using?

As already posted. The lifters are hydralic, no adjustment necessary.

The "o-rings" (between the oil pan and block) can start to flatten on older cars and cause a light ticking at start up. Nothing to worry about in the short term.

Thanks gentlemen! To answer you questions.

Yes the ticking goes away post warm up and normal operating RPM ranges, but also intermttenly returns during these normal and warm running ranges. I've always used the standard 10-30wt quailty brands of oil. I'll plan to replace these O-rings per your suggestions. Please advise of other simptoms that would indicate a the more severe lifter(s) failure.
